A VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE'S PERSPECTIVE
Volunteer Advocate Marilyn Howard, Fulton County CASA, Inc., Atlanta, GA.
I love being a bridge between the child and their hope for tomorrow, their chance at a better future. ...If you understand the position that our young children are in, with abusive family situations, you can't help but assist an innocent child who has no control over his or her environment. It's about giving back to the most vulnerable members of our society.
A FORMER FOSTER CHILD'S PERSPECTIVE
Former foster child Conception Cuevas
I entered the foster care system at the age of 7. I lived in 11 different placements and attended 8 different high schools. Fortunately at the age of 15, I got my CASA, Erica. Foster children are special people, and they can succeed despite all of our obstacles - and all they need is a light of hope like Erica was to me. With the help of people like CASAs, many more of us can stand up here in front of America and say 'I made it.'
A JUDGE'S PERSPECTIVE
Judge Leonard Edwards, Past President of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges
CASA volunteers truly help the judge, the court process and most of all the children they speak for. The volunteers in this national network are recruited, trained and supervised by excellent staff members in local programs. And in turn, CASA programs and staff receive valuable support, guidance and training from the National CASA Association. It is gratifying to see the difference CASA volunteers make for so many children.
