Wulf H. Utian, MD, PhD, has dedicated his entire professional career to women's health care, particularly infertility and the study and management of menopause. The consistent purpose of his studies and writings throughout this time has been to establish a scientific foundation for an extremely emotive subject and to develop guidelines for quality health care.
From his PhD, through almost 200 scientific publications, several books, and 100 editorials in various journals, he has contributed widely to current understanding and clinical management of the menopause. His significant contributions to knowledge include clarifying the definitive symptoms and physical signs directly related to the change in endocrine profiles through the menopause transition, differentiating symptoms responsive to hormone therapies, identifying a mood/cognitive effect of exogenous estrogens, demonstrating that different estrogens induce different responses (for example, on lipids and on calcium metabolism), demonstrating continued function of conserved ovaries after hysterectomy which lead to changes in clinical practice with conservation of ovaries, and pioneering non-oral postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) administration, low-dose HT, and the attenuating effect of progestins on estrogen-enhanced blood flow. He has been a leader in developing quality of life instruments, his UQOL being widely used in clinical studies and practice.
Dr. Utian has long been a pioneer in organizing the world scientific communities. He was one of the three original founders of the International Menopause Society (IMS). He was the founder of The North American Menopause Society and has helped steer its development from inception to the present as its Executive Director. He has worked to enhance cross-cultural and international scientific and clinical endeavors, currently serving as the Chairman of the Council of Affiliated Menopause Societies, an arm of the IMS. Dr. Utian has served in senior editorial roles for the leading scientific publications addressing menopause. He was one of the first Medical Editors (beginning in 1978) of Maturitas, has served as Medical Editor of Menopause Management since its inception in 1988, and has served as the Editor of Menopause: The Journal of The North American Menopause Society since its inception in 1994.
Dr. Utian has also had a distinguished clinical career. One of the founders of in vitro fertilization, he performed the world's first surrogate IVF pregnancy in 1984. Through his career, he has served thousands of patients and has led numerous efforts to provide trustworthy consumer educational materials.
Finally, he has had a strong academic career, heading the Endocrine Clinic and Menopause Clinic at the University of Cape Town, directing the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, chairing the departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology at CWRU-affiliated hospitals for 20 years, notably University Hospitals of Cleveland, and serving as Chairman of the Department of Reproductive Biology at CWRU from 1989 to 1999. Currently he is Consultant in Gynecology and Women's Health at the Cleveland Clinic, and President of Rapid Medical Research, an independent clinical research center.
For all of his efforts, he has been honored nationally and internationally. He has testified before Congress, chaired an OTA Committee on menopause, lectures to scientific and public groups internationally, and is regularly interviewed and cited by television and written media from around the world.
