CBS.com: Congratulations on your Emmy nomination.
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: Thank you very much.
CBS.com: You were on the GL set when the news came out.
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: Yeah, I was getting ready to announce the Outstanding Talk Show nominees.
CBS.com: What was your reaction when you heard your name?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: Well, my jaw dropped and I braced myself up against the wall – I was in very high heels standing on some steps. I really wasn’t expecting it at all. So, it really was one of those surreal, unexpected, feel punched in the gut kind of moments.
CBS.com: What kind of reaction did you get from the people on set?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: They’re very supportive. We were on the Guiding Light set. We had the cast and the crew there. I was getting ready to work. What I’m sensing these days at Guiding Light is that we really feel like it’s not so much [about] the individual nominations but the collective [ones]. We work together everyday. We see how hard people work. Nobody there feels like any one person is more deserving than another, it’s just sort of the way these things work out. But, everyone’s very supportive of everyone else. We’re just in general happy that the show got so many nods.
CBS.com: What was on your prenomination reel?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: I used the show where Alan has locked Olivia up in Ravenwood and she’s trying to negotiate a way out. It seems that what she has to concede to is Bill [not] adopting Emma.
CBS.com: Have you given any thought to what you’ll wear on Emmy night?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: No. We just had to submit the second show, and I just spent the week doing that. I suppose maybe some time in April I’ll start to figure that out. I probably will hire a stylist like I did [when I was nominated before] in 2002 because I’m not very good at dressing myself. People have to put me together! I need help.
CBS.com: What did you end up picking for your second show?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: I chose the Bill and Olivia jailhouse wedding. I thought Danny [Cosgrove, Bill] was adorable in it and Bradley [Cole, Jeffrey] and Marj [Dusay, Alex] are very, very funny. So, I thought it would be a nice contrast to the more serious stuff in Ravenwood.
CBS.com: How is this nomination different than when you were nominated – and won the award – three years ago.
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: I think there’s less pressure because I’ve had the experience. I just think longevity is reward enough. I’m more interested in having great story, quite frankly. That’s what excites me, going into work everyday. This is just sweet icing on the cake. I’ll be able to go this year and enjoy myself. I was a nervous wreck before. As strange as it sounds being an actress, I’m not used to so much attention. [Laughs] It was a little intimidating.
CBS.com: Do you have a good luck charm that you will carry with you on Emmy night?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: You know what? Probably not. I’m not really a good luck charm kind of gal, but I believe more in walking into situations with good intentions. Bottom line, we’re all very lucky to be working and be in the [soap opera] community, and I think genuinely everyone feels that. The award show is a fun thing to do. I’ll be there and I’ll have a smile on my face.
