CBS.com: Congratulations on your nomination.
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: Thank you!
CBS.com: Where were you when you found out?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: I was in California getting my boys off to school. [My publicist] Leslie called me and we listened [to the nomination announcements] together. It was funny, because I was definitely in mom mode. [I was] trying to get my five-year-old dressed, which is nearly impossible in the morning. But, yeah, I could hear it very clearly over the phone, so it was exciting.
CBS.com: You must be thrilled about the show getting so many nominations.
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: Oh, I’m blown away. I’m very excited for the show. We had such huge transitions last year that took its toll on us emotionally. We changed studios, and [had to] adjust to a whole new environment, just working out the kinks in the technical end. We worked so hard last year; I can’t even explain it correctly. So, yes, when you see something like that, it makes you go, “Wow, that was worth it.”
CBS.com: Who is the first person you told?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: My husband. I was still on the phone and I [whispered,] “I was nominated!” He could read my lips.
CBS.com: What was on your pre-nomination reel?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: Bill and Olivia’s breakup. It was Danny’s [Cosgrove] last day. It was such a well-written show, and it had such variety in it. It’s shows like that that are really easy to perform.
CBS.com: What else will you put on your reel this time?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: The second tape is Olivia’s daughter has been kidnapped by Gus and she’s holding him at gunpoint, threatening to kill him if he doesn’t return her. It’s Olivia, Gus and Bill. I just felt that Danny and Ricky Paull [Goldin] were so great in it. Especially Ricky, he had to really push me. [Olivia] starts to lose her mind and think that she sees Phillip.
CBS.com: Have you figured out what you’ll wear on Emmy night?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: No, no. I’m going for something simple, I know that. Something simple and comfortable. I don’t care if it’s black! [Laughs] So many people tell me not to wear black but if it fits me well and it’s elegant and simple, that’s what I’m going with.
CBS.com: How do you think the Emmys will be different this year, being out in L.A.?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: I think it’s going to have an entirely different feel to it. It’s the end of April, so I’m curious about the weather. The joke is, it always rains [in New York on Emmy night], and it’s usually pretty chilly. I think it’s going to be warm, but I’m curious about the rain. We may need designer umbrellas. But it’s going to be earlier. The whole L.A. scene, I think the East Coast people are going to have a great time. I love New York, but it’s nice to have a change of scenery this year. It’s exciting.
CBS.com: Do you have a good luck charm?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: Just my husband. Anybody that makes me laugh is my good luck charm!
CBS.com: Is there less pressure because you’ve won before?
CRYSTAL CHAPPELL: You still feel this, I don’t know, anxiety because people are focused on you. You’re competing and part of you of course wants to win. I don’t know. I just think it’s an exciting, weird night. It’s really a day out of time. Ultimately the next day, whether you have a statue or not, you’re still changing a diaper! [Laughs] But for that one evening, you’re Cinderella.
