CBS.com caught up with three time Emmy nominee Ron Raines, who is enjoying his first nomination in the Lead Actor category.

CBS.com: Congratulations on your nomination.
RON RAINES: Well, thank you. I’m very excited.
CBS.com: Where were you when you found out you were nominated?
RON RAINES: I was in my dressing room running lines with Beth Chamberlin [Beth]. The makeup room came and knocked on my door and told me.
CBS.com: Were you surprised?
RON RAINES: I was thrilled and surprised. Yeah, I was very surprised.
CBS.com: Who was the first person you told?
RON RAINES: Well, I normally take my cell phone to work, but I did not take my cell phone, so I couldn’t call anybody. But people had called my house, so when my wife checked the message machine, she found out about it. But she’s always the first person I call. I spoke to her that afternoon after we shot our scenes and she had heard from the phone calls I’d received from friends and colleagues and relatives. So, it was exciting.
CBS.com: What are some of the scenes that you’re most proud of from last year?
RON RAINES: I think the ones having to deal with Phillip and my dilemma with him and our confrontation. Those were pretty emotional.
CBS.com: Have you given any thought to what you’ll be wearing on Emmy night?
RON RAINES: I will be wearing a tuxedo. [Laughs] That’s a really hard one.
CBS.com: Do you have one in your closet or do you go to the Costume Designers on GL?
RON RAINES: I have two in my closet and I have one in Costume. I’ll probably wear one in my closet.
CBS.com: How many times have you been nominated before?
RON RAINES: This is my third [nomination], my first in Lead Actor.
CBS.com: How is that different for you?
RON RAINES: I don’t know. I’m just thrilled to be in the company of some colleagues I have a tremendous amount of respect for. I was also just thrilled with the response that GL got in the acting categories. Nine acting nominations – I think that was just fabulous.
CBS.com: Did you speak to fellow nominee Robert [Newman, Josh]?
RON RAINES: Yeah.
CBS.com: Do you have a little rivalry going on?
RON RAINES: No. I don’t! [Laughs] You’ll have to ask Robert.
CBS.com: Do you have a good luck charm or something you might bring with you on Emmy night?
RON RAINES: I’ll bring my wife. That’s the best luck charm I’ve ever had. And just enjoy the evening. It’s just a wonderful evening. I haven’t been to L.A. on one of these things since we used to do the Soap Opera Digest Awards back in the 90s. Those were really fun. We’re all really pumped. Tell my fans hi and that I’m just honored and very happy.
