Everyone wants to look their best when going out on the town -- epecially on Emmy night! Learn makeup how-to tips from The Bold and the Beautiful's makeup artist Christine Lai Johnson. CBS.com has step by step instructions that will help you achieve that Emmy evening glamour!
CREATING YOUR CANVAS
The beginning of the process is to lay down the foundation smooth and evenly in a thin layer. You want to have a nice smooth foundation. It's alright to have a little of your natural color show through the base. Blending it off going over and under the jaw area is a good rule of thumb because you want it to look seamless. It could be cream or liquid but liquid is thinner so that will give you a more natural look. That's always a good way to go. Theatrically we use a cream. The purpose of the foundation is to even out the complexion and at the same time level out any highs and lows in the coloration of one's skin.
Then you put a concealer under the eyes which is very important because after the age of 5, almost everyone has circles of some sort. Smooth it on under your eyes with a sponge. It should be one or two shades lighter than your foundation. Another good trick is it could just be a foundation, like if you use a Shinto #3 for the base, you could use a Shinto #1 for the concealer - just go a few shades lighter than your foundation. Then to set the makeup, powder the whole face.
IT'S ALL IN THE EYES
First thing I do is to set the frame of the eyes. I will enhance the eyebrows. Tweeze your eyebrows and fill in brows with a slanted brush. I use anywhere between taupe to almost dark brown. I mix that, and then I'll brush in the brows with the shadow and or a colored pencil from blonde to dark brown. Then soften it with a brow brush.
Once we have the eyebrows done, we do the eye shadow. I'll go from mid-eye to brow using a lighter/matte almost like an off-white or a little bit more of a natural color just to set the eye makeup to prepare your canvas. Because this is for an evening out, I used a glistening pink on the lid. I use a darker contour, a MAC eggplant color, and contoured the outer eye area so it gives it more of a fanning out, glamour shape. Put the darker contour shadow on the outer half from the eyelashes out to the crease of the eye. I used a highlighter on the brow which was a neutral color that had just a little dash of pink in it. I hesitate to say it's white but it's a lighter shade of pink on the brow so it gives the brow bone a little accent.
I use a black eyeliner, a thin line closest to your eyelashes. Then I like to soften the eyeliner. I take a pointed rounded out brush and then I soften up the line, so you get a little more of a smokey effect. I use a cake liner so I can wet it and then be able to have a lot more control with that. So I paint it on. I line the under lashes with MAC coffee pencil. It's a little softer night time look rather than a little too hard. It's good to keep the eyeliner natural. A lot of times I'll wing out the liner upward a little. It gives the eye shape a little more flare.
BAT THOSE LASHES
Curl your lashes. Then put mascara on the top and bottom and let them dry. Then to give your lashes a little more of a kick, I put individual lashes, the short length. Then I put them on the outer half of the eye so it really pops the eye and gives a nice glamorous look but it's very natural and it's comfortable. A good trick is that there are two different sizes to the lashes. I used the mini which actually a lot of people use reverse upside down [on the bottom lashes].
ARE YOU BLUSHING?
I prefer to put the blush on at this point. So, once the eyes are done, then I put the blush on. I had you smile so I could get it on the natural roundness of the cheeks so it has a soft nice contour to your face. Blush position should be right on the apples of the cheeks. For night time is not garish, it's just a more colorful version. It could be just brighter.
KISSABLE LIPS
Pencil your lips with a MAC Cedar pencil which is kind of a rosy pink color. It's really a nice all purpose liner for most people because it gives it just a hint of color and then I filled in with MAC Sheik. The lip pencil enhances and keeps your lipstick in place but it's blended into the lipstick so it's not just a harsh line.
HOT TIPS
That's the time when almost everybody can wear shimmer. Right now everything's shimmery, but different degrees of shimmer. Be a little bit light-handed on it. The thing that's most important when anyone's doing any kind of makeup whether it's for evening or daytime is that everything should be well blended. Blending is so important. The eye shadows should blend to where there's a nice even flow to the color even though it goes from eyelid to contour.
MAKEUP MISTAKES
A lot of people choose a makeup foundation either too light or too dark. The task of going to a beauty counter at a department store is still kind of a challenge but don't check the color on the back of your hand. The color of your hand is not the same as your face. It really does need to go on your face to test and preferably in natural light. The base should match your face color as much as it can. You don't want to change your complexion - you want to enhance it. You don't want to look like you're wearing a mask.
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
Having the proper tools always helps. For the consumer, if you buy a powder brush, a blush brush, one or two eye shadow brushes, eye liner brush and a lip brush - that will cover you through. It's important. The tools of the trade are very important and essential. Nowadays there are so many good companies that are sold at all types and different levels of price that there's really no excuse to not have them. Lastly, have fun with it!

Fashion: Do's and Don'ts!
GL Costume Designer Shawn Dudley 05/30/07

You have to admit that one of the best parts about watching the Daytime Emmy Awards is to see those fashion do’s and unfortunate fashion don'ts. Viewers watch in anticipation, and for inspiration. Guiding Light costume designer, SHAWN DUDLEY weighs in on how to find that perfect dress, what the current fashion trends are, and how you can emulate that look.
ACTORS ARE JUST LIKE YOU
Ever wonder how your favorite actor finds that glamorous dress for the big night? While many [actresses] come to Shawn to ask for help and advice, others have fun going to designers and borrowing dresses. Last year, Emmy winner, Gina Tognoni wore a gown made by one of the Project Runway designers, Kara Janx. Recently Bonnie Dennsion (Daisy) stopped by to show Shawn her dress, a hot number from Nicole Miller.
WHAT MAKES THE PEFECT OUTFIT
The key to finding the perfect outfit is to dress for your personality. You don't want the dress to wearing you. Show off your style. If you're fun and funky, show it off. And remember, it’s not about labels and expensive gowns. You can work it just as easily in a Forever 21 dress than something from Neiman Marcus.
GET THE SUPERSTAR LOOK, FOR LESS
There will always be different price points in stores. Instead of trying to get the exact look, women should try to get close to that feel of the outfit. Is it old Hollywood glamour, or a modern funky look? Don't copy it exactly. It's best to try and get close and put your own spin on it. Right now, the styles of dresses are pretty easy to find. [There is] not a lot of beading, people are leaning towards more subtle colors. There seems to be less skin and more elegance, and that's all pretty easy to find in stores.
WHAT YOU'LL SEE AT THE EMMYS
This year it's all about comfort. It makes a difference being in Los Angeles and in June this year. We can assume June in Los Angeles will be pretty warm weather. So, because of that there is a push for comfort. [There will be] lighting up on the fabrics and colors because of the [anticipated] warm weather.
COLORS GALOR!
Besides the shape and structure, color is the first thing that catches your eyes. So what will the stars be wearing this year? Everyone's leaning towards more subtle colors; I have several actors who are even considering black. And if you thought black was a big no-no, think again. In the past you haven't seen many women in black, because they want to attract attention, but now I think it’s more about how someone is carrying themselves. A black dress cut beautifully with actress wearing it appropriately can be a hit.
FINALLY
Last but not least, remember the key to pulling off an amazing look is to make sure you are comfortable in it. Be confident, be bold and, most of all, have fun.

Fashion: Accessories, Accessories, Accessories!
ATWT Costume Designer Maggie Delgado 05/23/07

Accessorizing can make or break the perfect outfit. One of the biggest secrets is that accessorizing is not just for females; males can also hop on the accessory bandwagon. CBS.com got the scoop on accessorizing from As the World Turns Costume Designer Maggie Delgado.
HOW TO ACCESSORIZE THE LOOK
It's glamour night, it's the Daytime Emmys. Everybody wants to be at their best and finest.
For women, accessorizes include: earrings, a necklace, rings, bracelets, shoes, bags, and even anything in your hair. Men have just as many choices in the accessory department: Tuxedo, no tuxedo, men love wearing pins for a cause, that's a terrific accessory. Guys can wear bracelets and necklaces. Collar shirts, tie, clip, tie pin. The options are endless.
DO: Keep it simple. If you are going to go with a great necklace, keep the ears bare. If you have earrings keep the neck simple or no necklace at all. Maybe you do something in your hair, and then have a nice pair of earrings.
Last year Maura West (Carly) who has a very delicate, yet sexy look wanted to create a simpler look. Maura paired her beautiful black sequence dress with a pair of simple earrings scoring a hit run with this outfit. Michael Park (Jack) wanted a fun hip look and to steer clear of that formal wear attire. His tie was really fun, bright bold stripes and an instant hit.
DON'T: Over accessorize. I wouldn't wear something in my hair, a necklace, earrings, rings, shoes and a bag. Stay away from things that match and definitely don't put all those things together.
The key to accessories is to not do too much.
THE BEST ACCESSORY FOR ANY OUTFIT
Shoes! There are so many shoes in the market now that have so much going on. There are beaded shoes or great heels. If you're wearing a dress that you're bored with and you don't want to buy another one, get yourself the best shoes. And the best part is that you don't have to spend a fortune, go to a discount shoe store. For men, shoes can really dress up a shirt or show off that funky side.
EASY TIPS FOR VIEWERS TO GET THAT EMMY LOOK
- You may not be able to borrow the most expensive jewelry, but viewers can pick up some great costume jewelry at your local department store.
- You have a dress from your sisters wedding, you don't want to wear? Visit your local seamstress and have it altered. Make that long dress, ballerina or turn it into am mini. You'll spend less and alter the look of the outfit completely.
- Use the same outfit but change the accessories. A new necklace, killer shoes can alter the look. You don't have to spend a million dollars to look a million dollars.
- Sashes and ribbons are a big thing in fashion trend right now. Take that amazing dress from four years ago and update the look with some fabric around the waist that compliments the dress.
- Shake things up! Get a new shirt to go with that old tuxedo, a wrap to reinitialize that old dress gathering dust in the closet. Just remember, don't be afraid!
