Question: Does anyone know if Gibbs sported a mustache post-Mexico because Mark Harmon needed to have one for some other role he was playing, or did they just write it in because they felt Gibbs wanted it? Just curious if anyone knew....whenever I watch re-runs of season 4 I always wonder.....

I thought it symbolized retirement & parting with the life he had at NCIS, perhaps even imitating Franks. IIRC, he shaves it after Franks kills the Russian in "Faking It".

I thought he was doing some tv movie or something at the time.

Had one when he first joined "St. Elsewhere". Looked a little more impressive to me back then, but then it was its natural color too.

I remember hearing an interview about the mustache and Mark Harmon said the producers or whoever called him up over the summer and asked him to stop shaving to see if he could grow a mustache in the last few weeks of the break before filming started up.

Ithink the stache is a character in itself... it played a role of a retired gibbs... a sense of relaxation... its weird to see him with it, but i think it served well in the story

I'm glad it bit the dust, I love him clean shaven. It worked well for the retirement idea.

I am glad Gibbs's mustache didn't stay long, but it was perfect to make us really feel (better say: see) Gibbs'changes: long hair and a beard while in retirement; a clean mustache when still adjusting again to NCIS; no more mustache but still a hair longer than usual for the rest of the season. --- I heard too that MH was asked to stop shaving his hair and face during the holidays, so the beard and long hair were that way on purpose. But I am not so sure about the big mustache: MH appeared in some events (unrelated to NCIS) wearing this mustache, which could make us think the mustache was real; and he said in a French interview that the mustache was real, because fake ones were irritating . www.team-ncis.com/album_pic.ph p However, he said it wasn't real in the cast roundtable from the season 4 dvds! But then, when he said that, another cast member told him to say the truth and he answered: "what?!", with a big look of surprise on his face! www.youtube.com/watch#!v=tiMxY 8rm8Ns&feature=related So I am really confused lol. If someone could clarify this, it would be great ^^ .

MH did say that at the roundtable to joke, about the fact that nobody believed it was real. He explained on the TEN channel (Australia), in an interview (April 2007) that he was on vacation in the Montana, around the 4th of July, when they called to ask him if he had cut his hair (at the end of the previous year, he had shaved his hair, with a razor). And he answered, no, because it was pretty short. Then they asked if he shaved, and he said, "Yes, of course", and they told him to stop shaving. So, yes, the mustach was real (hence the fact that he was wearing it at events, hard to shave then have it again 2 days later ^), but it was only for the show.

Ah, thank you! Makes sense....I understand what it symbolizes in the show, I just didn't know if they wrote in Mark's mustache, or if Mark was asked to grow it specifically for NCIS.I do NOT like him with a mustache-it makes him look old, I think. Much more handsome without it.I love when Fornell says, "I know you have the mustache in a box somewhere." Too funny.

I wasn't sure if he was serious or not in the roundtable (he was pretty convincing lol!), but you must be right: all other clues indicate that the mustache was real, so he must have been joking (plus I remember now that his costars stated, in the same roundtable, that he was a really good liar, able to "hold it" and say "no" when asked if he was responsible for some prank lol). Thanks for the clarification! ^^
