I don't know if there is really an unlying reason to it. Maybe the writers just thought it would be fun to have a theme (i love themes) for the show. Maybe they wrote the first episode and thought that "red" would be fun to use. Who knows....maybe next season they will all have "blue" in them.

Personally, I agree with chika2010's theory. Because the main character is Patrick Jane, the titles of the episodes would probably revolve around him. And since Red John is his "arch nemisis" per say, the episode titles revolve around red.

Three theories come to mind when I analyze this. The first of which is outlined by chika2010 (Impressive theory by the way), The second is that it plays largely to this chapter of Patrick Jane's life reason being that The mentalist mirrors Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novels of the Sherlock Holmes Series. Sir AC Doyle's SH novels titles always had something to do with the overall theme of the novel. In essence all those episodes are simply a prelude to the true story Jane's Journey to confront and defeat Red John. Though it is two early to tell if either has any validity. The Third is that it's the human thought process projecting patterns where none lay... Also to early to tell.

It's a red herring!Next season will probably be about the color blue or green or even purple.Have you noticed the similiarities between the Mentalist and the Profiler of the 90"s.Here it's a blonde haired good looking guy. The profiler was a blonde, good looking woman. The mentalist is called by his last name, Jane... a feminine name. The profiler was called Sam... a predominantly masculine name. Both had a spouse killed by a serial killer(Jane's daughter was also killed). Both are taunted by the seriel killer. Both are the members of a team with four other core members. Both can see what others miss. Both had very stern bosses, though Robert Davi was better suited to play Bailey Malone than Robin Tunneyas Teresa Lisbon.Lucy Lawless would have been better suited for the part. A tough, beautiful, strongwilled woman to go up against(in more ways than one) Patrick Jane.Just my thoughts.

The color red actually signifies many different things. Most commonly we associate red with death, blood, gore, danger, violence, anger and other similar things. However, the meaning behind the color red can also be taken to include passion, strength, energy, and power. All of these meanings fit well with the show plot: there is this crazy, mad man who has a vendetta against the main character- and although we haven't heard from him in a long time, Red John is what drives Jane to do what he does (catch the bad guys). Red John's MO is the smilie face drawn in the vics blood where, before even seeing the vic, you see the face. This gives the person a sense of danger , wariness, and foreboding, that there will be violence to come. Jane is passionate in what he does, and all of the character's give the show a sense of energy . I'm a little bit more unsure about the significance of the color in the title. My best explination (okay guess ) is that it all goes along with the Red John theme, and reminds the viewers that the whole point for Jane being there is his determination to catch Red John. Also, red colors are viewed as active and exciting- face it, if the guy was called Blue John, it wouldn't be as cool!

Mickey, I'm picturing Lucy Lawless towering over Simon Baker. OK, he's 5'10" and she's only maybe an inch taller, but put her in heels . . . I know, it should be irrelevant, but that would be very unusual casting!I like the idea of finding red objects in the episodes

I noticed that after the second episode. It made me think of "The Sixth Sense" with all the scenes in red referring to ghosts. I wonder where they will go with that regarding the "red". I really like this show! I like the way it's done how Patrick Jane is always so calm, cool and collected. He doesn't let anything get him down and he is always smiling. I love that smile! Like he's about to get into mischief.
