Re:Do you think what happened to Jack is unfair?

I think he deserved to be fired and, if it were real, he would have been. This show's greatest downfall is that it's become the Jack Malone Show. It got better ratings when it had balanced storylines. They need to create a great storyline for Danny. When they finally gave him a relationship with Elena, Jack swooped into that storyline as well and became more a part of it than Danny. It's not fair and the imbalance has made this show lose viewers at a rapid rate.

Unfair? Nop Idon't tink so. But having a new boss few episode, and Jack like a streat agent, it's a great thing. It'll bring something new to the show, and plus it might bring Jack and Sam back together wich is even better ! I can't wait to see this new season !

He's demoted and stays in the team therefore his career, his competences, his talent are recognized else he was suspended or demoted in an another team or turned : it's a just punishment with protection. He's not perfect (happily) but like the others. On the ratings, it's general and for a change of schedule, it's often ineluctable. This show is always in the ten top (show with script).Small remark : the season 5 was fallen and there are Danny - Elena and critics ...It's difficult to please all people. It's a detective show (not forget) and Anthony Lapaglia (great actor) is the leader ...(the others plays well also :wink . They participate all in the success of show : there are a lot of complicity.Sorry for the errors : I am french-speaking.

But if they keep focusing so much on his character, we'll never get more Danny or D/E. Just like last season, we didn't have any Danny storylines or any follow up on D/E. And this was because the focus was soley on Jack, with a little Sam thrown in. So I'm not really looking forward to Medina...because again that will take away from the all the other storylines they've never followed up on.

I think that what happened to him was completly fair considering all the 'bad' things he's done this season. I have to admitt that i didn't really like the fact that Danny said to the OPR Jack couldn't run the MPU anymore but after spending all the summer long thinkin about this i finally came up with the conclusion that somehow, Danny did the good thing. Now, regarding the whole J/S thing, well i'm sure they would have gotten together anyways

No, I do not think he what happened to Jack was fair. He should have been fired so he was actually given a big favor by the powers above by being allowed to keep a job in the FBI. The Jack of today is not a Jack I recognize. I want Jack the badass SAC, solving crimes by using his head and heart, not his fist. I hope this demotion allows him to figure things out with Claire so he can return to the great man we know he was and hopefully can be again. I also hope they resolve this mess and get back to quality storylines and intriguing stuff for the entire team. I am growing weary of the Jack and Sam show. I watch for Danny, Martin, Vivian and, heck, I'd even prefer more Elena time over more JS. Then again, that may be because I am still very bitter about what became of MS. I mean, come on, do the WAT PTB seriously think we have amnesia and forgot?

I am afraid that the whow is becoming The Jack/Sam Soap Opera. I hope that this season will see the show return to the excellent procedureal crime drama that it was in the past.thank you for this forum and for the opportunity to voice my opionion.Looking forward to the new season.

I can't wait to see the Jack (and Sam) Show, personally. Jack can do whatever he wants and it's okay with me (except bringing that silly Anne and his mullet hair style back).Unfair for Jack to be demoted? I'm okay with it as it brings in a bit of drama and it's only for a few episodes anyway, so that's fine. Nice to see Steven Weber coming in to add to the drama.

Re:Do you think what happened to Jack is unfair?

Of course it's fair. If it was real life he would immediately have been out on his ear so he was extremely lucky to even have any job at all with the Bureau.Following on from others' comments I have to say upfront that I am a Martin fan but realise that Jack is the lead actor in the show and always will be until he leaves/the show ends. However I think The Powers That Be have to realise that the show is called Without A Trace NOT The Jack Malone Show co-starring Sam Spade. You only have to look around at Boards in general to see that almost everyone is crying out for more team interaction similar to Season 1-3 and for Viv, Danny and Martin to be given more airtime. Jack and Sam would also get their fair share. But I don't think it's any co-incidence that the almost sidelining of the above three coupled with the almost total concentration on Jack is largely responsible for the considerable drop in ratings. Not entirely, because there is also a certain lack of direction with stories not being taken to their conclusion.Possibly they went too far in Season 4 in cutting back on the personal angle but perhaps a good balance would be about 80/20 in favour of the MP story.A feature of the past few Seasons has been the continual jumping about and the failure to close out on many themes such as:Viv's heart problemsMartin's pain killers addicitionMartin's family connectionsDanny/ElenaDanny' s familyDanny/Martin relationshipIt's almost as if these three don't have a personal life at all now.The biggest failing has been the "ending" of the Martin/Sam ship. That was handled extremely badly. Leaving aside whether you were a Jack or Martin fan you just can't go from being a twosome to bustup and then working together as colleagues without some sort of closure and reaction from the other team members but yet Sam sat by the unscious Martin telling him she was going nowhere and them zilch - it seems as if it never happened.Obviously with personal storylines there is no telling how the viewers will take to them - what will please some will not suit others although it appears pretty obvious that the Sam/Baby one went down like a lump of lead.If there is to be a healthy future for the show the producers are going to have to be a bit more even-handed. I don't think even the most die-hard Jack fans can be happy with where they have taken his character.

Do you think what happened to Jack is unfair?

I think Jack is a complex character to say the least, it's obvious he has always had his demons and these come into his job. As a matter of personal opinion I have to say I am not overly happy with the 'vigilante' style Jack we have at the moment. I loved Jack in, for example, the Spaulding case, when he was getting him to confess. It was so intense and a big thumbs up to his Emmy winning acting ability.I just believe Jack excels when he is slightly dangerous, a hint of the unexpected. This Jack seems slightly extreme to me, and as a result a tad unbelievable.

I think the 'new Jack' is indicative of the problems with the show currently. the quality of the show came from subtlety.

Jack's demotion will be temporary, therefore, it gives him an opportunity to reflect on his personal issues and helps J/S work on defining their new relationship.I certainly have no problems having the writers focus more on Jack and Samantha, especially since its creator Hank Steinberg wrote their backstory due to its actor natural chemistry. I've always gotten the impression that their relationship and their work in missing person's unit were parallel. Therefore, I have no issues with it being Without A Trace: The Jack Malone Show co-starring Sam SpadeAs for the lack of storyline continuity, its showrunners/executive producers Nash and Walker must be doing what the network wants since they continue working at the helm. I look forward to season 7 and season 8. CORRECTIONS: Spelling

Jack was out of line and does need to be reeled in. All law enforcement shows need the "maverick" character that's willing to do what's necessary to get the job done, consequences be damned. It's a little more serious since Jack was in charge. I prefer character driven dramas and Jack is the perfect protagonist. There is definitely some unfinished business between Jack and Sam and I don't expect it to be all sweetness and light between these two. I love ALP and the more of him we see, the better.

Just what that is everyone will have their own opinion and that is for another thread to discuss. The show peaked in Season 3 with an audience of almost 18.7 viewers entering the top 10 at #8. The following year although it dipped slightly to just over 18.5m it achieved a peak rating of #7.Then in S5 the figures plummeted to 14.7m as it dropped to #16 and last year it only held on to a top 20 placing by the skin of its teeth with an audience of 13.1m.Obviously with the advance of the internet, television viewing figures are mostly dropping across the board but the significant factor is that WaT is dropping faster in relative terms so there surely have to be serious questions asked?I really hope you're right in thinking there will be a S8.

I don't mind the continuity of J/S. That's fine...any continuity is fine with me. My problem is why is it that only Jack storylines get continuity. Or more precisely, why is it that only Danny storylines get dropped. Case in point a spoiler from last night's episode:spoiler spacespoiler spacespoiler spacespoiler spaceThere was no continuity with Danny's storyline telling us what he said during his interview about Jack's performance last season. There was no Danny/Jack tension. Nothing. It's literally the third time they've dropped tension between them...for no apparent reason. They did it in season three, season four and now again in season seven. And don't tell me the season is still young...and it could be revisited. I've heard that song and dance too many times now.

If it was real life he'd probably be out of a job completely but then that would be the end of the show so I'm happy with the alternative. And there's a bonus in that we get to see how he reacts to another forceful character being in charge. I like vigilante Jack, he's never better than when he's bending the rules to get someone back.

The programme was still on Thursday for S5 so there has to be some major reason but WHAT?

They didn't expect the show to go beyond 3 seasons or so, so that would have been a reasonable timeline. When Hank and Ed "left" it was by then obvious the show had at least 5 seasons in it so the new boys had to make a decision and they chopped M/S at the end of Season 3. Who knows there may even have been some influence from the actors in the decision.

For goodness sake, this character has already slept with Jack and Martin. Is it time for her to sleep with Danny? I realize that sex sells, but I thought this show was about finding people, not about Jack. The only thing I can see that this character contributes is violating people's right and roughing everyone up. If a public official treated me the way Jack treats some of the character on this show, I would sue the organization. Also, his haircut looks like hell.

Now I do understand that not everyone is a rabid Jack fan like me and while I was happy with the Jack-centric story, some folks might not be. But I think that story really climaxed at the end of last season and I do think that some more attention does need to be focused on the other characters now to make things balance out a bit. I like all the characters on the team and I especially love the chemistry between them. That being said, what I take exception to is the tone of sophia's post. I think we have to remember that the whole team was badly shaken by the shooting. They were already concerned about Viv's heart surgery and then the ambush happened. If I remember correctly, Jack was concerned about Danny. He made him go to the hospital with Martin. Danny came back to the office and said the doctor's had cleared him. Danny was wrong when he shot into the hospital room. He was still shaken and overreacted. He could have cost someone their life.

Third : Why did he go to the court with Elena ? and not Danny

IMO it was because Jack is Elena's supervisor and he was the one who made all the decisions.

Four : do you remeber when Sam hit those two guys ?

I see your point of view and I do agree from a "cold" point of view, You're right Jack sent Danny to hospital with Martin...but he saw the car riddled with bullets, he could have imagined what they had been passing through..how can you expect him to come back to work as if nothing had happened ? What I want to say is that okay Jack has always been a bit a rough guy...but just a hand on his shoulders ,or just saying a simple - it's okay -just a look....I do understand the situaiton , everything was so confused , Viv and Martin in hospital, but I would have expected them to get closer not to get colder...In Safe ( your memory is much better than mine ...) when Danny was looking at the picture on the whiteboard, thinking about what had just happen and his eyes filled with tears, Sam looked at him in such a cold way, as if he was responsible for the ambush and Martin's injuries...I mean...I was a bit astonished...it was not Danny fault if he had just had a scartch...weren't they friends. After watching the episode ( I watched it again some months ago on nationa tv ) I was stunned...Maybe because I am Italian and we are not that cold...Maybe it is just my idea, but I found that Danny was left completely alone, and he was so badly and coldy treaten from everyone....As I said now I can watch season 4 and season 3...and watching two episodes of season 4 one day, and two episodes of season 3 two days later...the diffference is clear...

I can agree...but I NEVER EVER think Danny would shoot at someone's back..Then I think he was right to keep him at gun point..if I remember the scene well....Carlos was holding a gun in his hand while talking to Elena, he was quite out of his mind, what if Carlos would shoot at Elena ? I think Danny knew this kind of men, and he was expecting something bad to come out suddenly like , maybe had happened with his dad and his mom ( which we are not allowed to know, since we knew very little about his past, if we knew something is thanks to his brother...btw: is he is prison or not ? ) jack did good telling him not to shoot, but I do not think he would have...but that's just my opinion.I was smiling when I read about not to fratenize if you are cooworkers....I am lucky I live in Italy...You see people shaking hands, hugging, spending time together, okay you do not hug in public...but a very warm handshake and a storng friendly clap on your coworker's shoulder...In fact, the professional "coldness " between them astonishes me a bit...( And I live in the North of Italy, that is :I am quite a cold person as well...but not to that point...)

For someome whose Mother tongue isn't English, mgv57 I think your posts are great and I have no trouble understanding themAs someone who is English speaking I feel a bit ashamed that so few of us bother to learn other languages. I certainly couldn't post on a foreign board.Kagomeasha has answered a lot of the points. I agree that there were an awful lot of possible storylines in Season 4 which could have been made more of, most of which you mention.Danny's attitude to Martin confuses me. Most say it is "survivor's guilt" at the beginning but I just can't fathom out why he was so reluctant to help Martin when he learned of his tablets addiction. First he made a half-hearted attempt to talk to him but was happy not to push it, then he really had to be pushed into helping him by Sam.I agree that S4 was just not as good as S1-3 but I don't think it was that much worse. For me it really went downhill with S5. Apart from the complete mess they made of Jack's character I actually thought S6 improved a bit.Apparently Hank Steinberg said at one stage that the set was so small that it was very difficult to get all the actors in when they had a team scene so when Elena arrived this must have made it so much worse and it could possibly be part of the explanation why we don't get these scenes anymore.Just such a scene in S7 Ep 1 showed us how much we miss them.

I do agree with you loveineric ( thanks for what you wrote about my English... I do hope it is as good as you say ) You know, the feeling I got by reading all the emails in this forum and in others is....everyone is quite confused by the attitude of the characters...I,too, was quite puzzled by Danny's attitude towards Martin, and ( I repeat ) I find it hard to believe he NEVER EVER went to see him...But , like you, I was surprised when he almost "refused" to help him in his addiction, since he does know what addiction is like...That's why I began to follow the episodes with less attention ( even because I usually do three things at a time...I am quite a busy person...)I still follow the episodes and I always will, I do hope to have a little time to watch the dvds with more attention...( even if I know that that means...to find more and more mistakes and things that do not work...) but when you see that they begin very good stories, then they drop them , that the story has not a good continuity, that the interaction between them doesn't almost exist ...( I agree...there are a lot of them now...) I certainly do not stay in my armchair , stuck to the tv to watch the show...Where is their friendship, their teasing each other, their intimacy ? I do miss that ( above all Danny and Martin together, they were great ! ) and I see I am not the only one. It is not just : Loving Danny or Loving Martin or Jack....they are greater if they are together...

It doesn't feel right he's now a back seat driver. Having him answer to his team, and this other guy, is totally embarrassing!! So, yes, i think what has happened to jack Malone, is wrong!! It breaks my heart! Now, seeing Martin being put in charge when this other guy goes away......is just wrong! I would stop watching the show, but i have been watching since the show 1st came on the air. It's one of my favorite shows.

Re:Do you think what happened to Jack is unfair?

I can't comment on a lot of this because I don't even watch the show anymore. It used to be one of my favorites and I never missed an episode - but once it became the "Jack Malone show" and he was over-acting every week, I just couldn't watch anymore. Sam and Martin were a good, and believable, couple; we're supposed to believe that she would get back together with Jack?! And what happened to Sam and Martin anyway? What happened to Jack's pregnant girlfriend? They were moving in together and then suddenly she was gone. I'm not sure if I missed an episode during that time because I was starting to lose patience with the show. I ended up liking all of the other characters more than Jack but their storylines were always too short and never really finished. What happened to Danny and Elena? It's like their relationships start but then they go nowhere. And Jack was constantly sticking his nose in where it didn't belong. It was getting really aggravating. I may have to watch again now that I know Jack has been demoted and Steven Weber is on it, he should be good for the ratings. That's my two cents...

Do you think what happened to Jack is unfair?

A few considerations: 1) I think what happened to Jack was fair, he made many mistakes, he had to pay. 2) No storylines was dropped, some of them simply ended: Martin's addiction, S/M's love story, Ann's relationship with Jack. D/E are going on, but they can't and have not to show us them, we simply DON'T CARE to see the single characters going home, kissing, hugging once it is established which one their relationship is, the show isn't about this. I love seeing some of their lives, a little here and there, like they always did. 3) The drop in ratings is general. "Desperate h." had 25 mls viewers at its premiere last year, this year they were 15 mls. "CSI M" started this year with more than 17 mls viewers, at its 2nd ep they were around 13. People can download eps extremely easily, sometimes it's even possible to see them on the networks' sites, this is the reason why. Wat last year was the only show to finish its season increasing steadily its public, I hope it will be the same this year.

I agree that storylines weren't "dropped", not in the writers' minds anyways. They were just concluded extremely badly. You don't have someone fall into serious addiction, get cured in 1 episode and NEVER revisit the story again. You don't start a relationship between 2 agents (Danny/Elena) and completely neglect it for a whole season with not even one reference. You don't have the star's girlfriend lose a baby, break up and leave town all in one episode and NEVER mention it again. And so on. The writers just don't know how to write a personal story. Just my opinion.

I mean, come on, do the WAT PTB seriously think we have amnesia and forgot?

jenniff, blame the writers for Jack not being fired. After all, it is his starring role, not Viv, Sam, or anyone else. The writers probably wanted to shake it up a little and showcase ALP's great acting and Jack's emotional attachment to the people he tracks. As far as MS, Sam put that to rest rebuffing M. Who is Claire? If you are referring to one of the producers, what could you possibly be referring to?I am a huge lover of WAT and it concerns me that it has dipped in the ratings. I think it is due to this new storyline that has Medina in charge. It was obviously not going to happen for Viv when J supposedly was leaving for Chicago and his wife told him not to come. That in itself added the storyline of Viv's dissatisfaction with her position/demotion and blames J and gives him attitude all the time. I know MJB is supposed to be a good actor and she does well being a bitch in this series, but I think it would be better if she would be a lot nicer too.

amphenol2 wrote: The drop in ratings is general.

Not being American I find the ratings hard to understand but apparently it is not so much the total viewership as the number of viewers in the 18-49 age group. This is what the advertisers base their decisions on how much to place on and in the end it is how much revenue the Networks take from advertising which calls the shots. The increase in viewers for WaT at the end of last Season was surely mostly due to the move back to Thursday from Sunday with the big lead-in from CSI.Neilson which is the company responsible for producing the ratings in the US runs a site TVByTheNumbers which uses a formula to preedict which shows will survive. They have an uncannily accurate track record. It's not based on previous Seasons therefore the change of night would not affect it.Althoiugh WaT is still doing reasonably well with older viewers and maintains a place overall in the top 20 it has lost a lot in the 18-49 demos since last year and since this Season's premiere has shed a few more.Based on initials figures WaT was rated as a possibility for cancellation however, as of October 22, it has been downgraded and is now listed as "cancellation by May."

They were great during the first 2 seasons, when they gave us little peeks into the characters past lives which didn't require follow-up. But when you tell a story in the present, it must have a beginning, a middle and an end. You can't peek into, let's say, addiction, and have the character act like it happened 20 years ago in subsequent episodes. I know the show only has 40 minutes, but it doesn't take long to include the tail end of a phone conversation between Jack and his daughter, or Martin and his sponsor. or Danny and his brother, or Viv and her husband. Hey, imagine if Sam had given birth at the end of last season, and there would be no reminder whatsoever during this season. Makes no sense, right? Well, that's exactly what they're doing to the other characters. With Sam, we get a reminder every episode. So, it's definitely a question of priorites. 100% Jack (or Sam), 0% anybody else. It used to be more like 80-20 during the first seasons, and most people agree that the show was much better then.

I actually agree with the way it ended. The stress on any FBI team that is searching for a missing person has NO time, IMO, to concern themselves with ethics. I have worked for goverment for many years and there are those individuals (elected or otherwise) that come across doing business in an ethical way but that does not mean that is the way it is. Take the past NYS Governor for instance. Jack does what has to be done and has the strength to do what he has to for the safe return of the missing person. His new boss finally figured that out although wants to keep his pride intact. I do agree on a personal level that the writers do not seem to finish story lines. I happened to like Sam and Martin together myself. I actually love the actors in the whole team. I would want Jack and his team to be the real thing (a team similiar) if anyone I know and loved was missing for sure!

I APOLGIZE, I am Italian, English is not my mother tongue so FIRSTLY : I beg you pardon if I have offended you or anyone......Then I'll try to explain : Saying " Prima Donna" I wanted to say a someone who centers all the attention on him/herself alone , leaving no room for anyone else., keeping them aside. in the dark..(I thought this Italian word was know in other language like ; bravo or other Italian words used in music which have no translation...)All the actors are clever ( the only one who, in my opinion, is a bit...stiff and not very expressive is Elena...she is a bit too cold...) but it is sad to see this too obvious less of balance between the actors...they are not a team working together and wat has lost its real focus ( the missing persons...) I repeat it is not Jack's or Danny's minutes on the screen ...but the main characters are the missing persons ( in my stricy opinion ) ...In no other show the attention is focus so much, too much on one or two characters ( here Jack 7 Sam )I followed their story at the beginning, but now, I think it is a bit..too much... I DO understand the happiness and joy of their fans of course, it is natural...but I love action and not love stories ( I would watch something else ) I watched, sorry I used to watch wat with great attention because I loved following the stories of those missingpeople and looking for them with the team, rebuinding their lives......but now...no team...no sign of their old friendship...a love story show..... (Please, let me know if is ti clear now the meaning of the word "prima donna" ? It has nothing to do with "donna " that is woman...it is NOT offensive)

However, I didn't find it offensive anyway because we all have opinions, but it had nothing to do with the female aspect. I primarily think of a Prima donna as egotistical, unreasonable and irritable, with a rather high opinion of themselves not shared by others and I just don't see Anthony Lapaglia as this, but I know you didn't mean that now. It just shows you how everyone is different because I do enjoy the show because of the romance, primarily Jack and Sam. I enjoyed the first few seasons because we saw a lot of flirting and issues between them, then seasons 4 and 5 came along which I didn't enjoy so much. I know the show is about the missing person and of course it wouldn't exist but for that. Let's hope that they will start to balance the episodes a little better soon.

That is as it MUST be...everyone expressing his/her own ideas...hopefully different ideas. peacefully...just think if you and I had exactly the same feelng : you would say : great !...I would say: ditto! ( I agree ) " that means...end of the story and of our exchange of opinions...Luckily we are ALL different and it is great to share different ideas ( without being aggressive and offend people : that's why I stopped answering to some people )Anyway I just let you know this : I am making a dvd with the scenes of Danny....do you know in one episode ( season 5..I guess ) for how long he was allowed to appear ? Two minutes and 25 seconds....in another 1 minutes and some seconds...If Jack's , Sam's, Martin's......supporters were Danny's suppoters, wouldn't they be little disappointed ? If Jack appeared only for two minutes...how would they feel ? Wouldn't they say _ Hey ! Why this ? Is there a reason ? - They were entitled to ...I would agree with them, even if I were not a fan of Jack's...that's what made me sad : to Jack's fans , that is right...That's what I do not think it is fair in the show, that's what I cannot understand : why the first seasons followed a path, then everything changed,...I can survive that, of course, there are more important things in life... but I,too, would like to sit and enjoy the show, like Jack's fans, like I used too, when I enjoyed the TEAM, instead now, I switch the tv off, feeling a bit disapponted...I cannot understand why they dislike him so much... what he did wrong, he is not a bad actor. and he doesn't seem to be a bad person, like the others in the show...I cannnot understand the reason why...that's all. (Please let me know if somehing is not clear, I am alwas afraid to be misunderstood it is easy when the language you use is not yours ( like...Prima Donna...sigh ) Mirella.

Mirella, I've said it before, don't worry about your English you do a great job. I hope that you get some decent Danny scenes soon. I think in another thread it says that the next episode should be a good one for danny/Elena fans and I do hope so. Enrique is a fine actor and I like his character very much. Anyway, I suppose we are going off topic here a little so I'll keep this brief. I do hope that the series progresses so that it gives all of the actors a chance to shine.

Re:Do you think what happened to Jack is unfair?

I do not see that we lost the bad-arse Jack Malone, as I only see his character acting as he always did.The "demotion" is an interesting twist, and will keep Agent Malone in-check for awhile. It will be interesting to see how long this "new boss" lasts. Will his departure be part of this season's storyline, or will he be taken out due to the displeasure of the show's fans?Personally, I would love to see Agent Malone knock his guy out, though not as the "bad-arse" character. More if this "new boss" ( sorry I do not remember his name ), got out of line somewhere. Maybe putting the team in unnecessary danger, or making a out of line comment about a member of the team. That should be in the episode where Jack Malone "redeems" himself ( as some of the fans here believe he should ).Just my two copper jackets...
