Fair enough, I can see that. To tell the truth, I was doing some work while watching the episode, so I probably missed Reid actually saying he is sorry (which is why I haven't mentioned it). Hard for a guy to focus on two things at one time, not the way that we are wired.

Part of being new at something is that you have to learn your place, but that is for Hotch to take care of because he is the leader, not Reid. Take ROTC, for example. I take orders from people who are ranked above me, the Hotch's of teh group. If I'm out of line, they handle it, not someone who is the same rank or lower rank than me (in Reid's case, we'll make it the same rank). As for Emily, I was rubbed the wrong way when she said that Hotch "liaised" with Joyner, but most of the other stuff never bothered me too much (there were a couple of things that made me say geez, but it didn't affect how I felt about her character in general). I'm a little understanding of that, though, since I have been known to have a few social slip-ups of my own, so maybe that is why it doesn't bother me. The reason that the "liaised" comment bothered me was because it seemed like she was trying to imply/instigate something that was never there. Maybe she was just joking, but there was probably a better time/place for that. The other comments seemed to just be accidental, slip of the tongue type things, which don't bother me too much.

Reid had issues (yes, it was the drugs fault, but he still had issues), and someone had to deal with them (being on drugs, he couldn't do that by himself, so someone had to show some concern). Since no one else stepped up to the plate, Prentiss did. So you could really blame everyone else for that as much as her, if not more. I can't tell you how bad it ticks me off when a low-ranked person in ROTC thinks he/she knows everything or tries to order people around. Of course, I have some special circumstances of my own in that class (lots of leeway, almost like being an officer), so I don't get put in my place a lot (then again, it isn't necessary because I discovered my place by myself). I think that is the main thing, you let the person try to find their place by themselves, and if they struggle then you give them a hint into the right direction. If they still can't find it, then you have to put a bit of a verbal smackdown (the fun part, lol).

She saw him scare a lady by implying that a murderer could be there with them at that very moment. Lets say you've worked with someone only a little while. I think if they hauled off and slapped a complete stranger on the job, with only you there to see it, a lot of people would probably say something like, "what the hell was that?" (I'm NOT saying Reid slapped anyone or anything like that, I'm trying to use examples to make a point) I don't think it would matter to a lot of people (don't want to say all) how new they might be, the main thing would be wondering what happened. She was just dealing with what she would have had to be blind to ignore, because she had a front row seat to see that Reid wasn't okay. She left the sit down and talk to him and air out all the issues to Gideon, by bringing it to his attention. You could always blame the writers for having Reid showing his first major sign of being not fine when he happened to be teamed up with Prentiss, rather than doing it when he was with Morgan or Gideon or someone else who knew him longer. And, Reid did snap at Morgan only one episode before. Fear and Loathing. "Thanks for broadcasting" and "I can still do my job, I'm not going to freak out!" Two differences there were he couldn't tell Morgan that he barely knows him, and Morgan wouldn't have backed down anyway. Then again, I don't think Reid was at all skeptical of Prentiss. Reid was one of the first people to welcome Prentiss, but somehow that arc of all of two episodes gets remembered way more than the way they got along more than fine in Lessons Learned, No Way Out, Profiler, Profiled (and those were the last episodes they spent any amount of scenes together until Distress). As far as liking originals better, well, I must be an anomaly. I've always far preferred Prentiss to Elle. And, while I do like Gideon better than Rossi, it's by a tiny margin. I've never been a big Gideon fan (except his friendship with Hotch) and didn't like him that much but he gets a couple of points above Rossi, because I never downright hated him. But, still my feelings on Rossi were never directly connected to any feelings about Gideon.

All of a sudden, Prentiss is on and you like her to, but Hotch is probably still going to be your favorite. Lets say that Hotch and Prentiss were exactly alike (making an example, since they obviously are not), but Hotch was on the show one or two years longer. Most people are probably going to like Hotch over Prentiss because they have seen more episodes with Hotch, so they have learned more about him. Hope I'm making sense there. Obviously, disliking an original changes that, but I personally liked all the originals (of course, I like the newer characters, too, part of the advantage of a crew that is very good at casting).

Speaking as the youngest in my own family, I can tell you that I was not coddled for a second of my life. Not in any form or fashion. Perhaps that's why I don't understand the entire team's seeming obsessive need to treat him like a child. He has been in the unit for several years, he wouldn't be able to do his job as well as he does (the psychology of it anyway) if he weren't stronger than they seem to think. He's what, 27 now? I remember how well Emily and Reid got along before he got grabbed. Maybe that's why I never thought she was out of line for showing concern. Like I said, she may not have known him long but she did like what she had seen. She's a caretaker by nature, it's not in her to stand by and watch someone suffer. The rest of the team seemed content to pretty much ignore it but she didn't. That's why she caught the brunt of his anger. The one issue the team saw fit to let him work out on his own was exactly the wrong one to leave him to. As for Hotch being mean to her when she showed up. Was it her fault that she came to the unit the way she did? No. Was she just supposed to ignore her orders to report to the BAU? That would have gone over really well. Hotch is a profiler, he should know better than to make assumptions. Yet that's exactly what he did with her. He knew her mother and assumed she was the same way. That was wrong. The only thing that keeps me from being angry at him too, is that he's offered some sort of contrition. When he went to her appartment to talk her out of quiting he did everything but say the words "I was wrong." That went a long way to me. How were people offended by Emily's liasing comment? JJ thought it was funny. You all really take life way too seriously if innocent little jokes like that upset you. And just for the record, when Hotch talked about working with Brit Chick before, I wondered if something more than work happened. And, until I get confirmation that Hotch had not been married when he was working with the Brit the first time, (which I know I won't) I don't consider jokes and whispers that he might have been with another woman innocent. And, I don't think Hotch's suspicion of Prentiss had to do with thinking she was like her mother. For all some people (including a certain author) seem to want to connect a brief period of animosity from Reid to Elle, I'd say that was more likely to have been the reason for Hotch's suspicion. Not because he was close to Elle (although he was, and not that way), but because of how she left and then someone just popping up. Also probably because he was supposed to approve who got assigned. I think he thought she was a mole or something. Which, technically, he was right that it was what she was supposed to be (why Strauss put her there), but he was wrong that she was a willing one, or was even aware of it. I mean, he was wrong to think it was her doing. And, I also don't think she was just ordered to go to the BAU. I think she was offered. At least in the CM universe (I don't know about the real FBI) they don't seem to order you to posts. Otherwise, Morgan would be gone now, since they wanted him for the Brit's job. Obviously, the agents do have the right to refuse posts. Prentiss wanted to be in the BAU. Clearly she had no idea the real reason she had been picked, and she would have been dumb not to take the offer for the job, when she thought it was all above board. So, I don't fault her at all for taking the job, but I don't think it was a matter of being ordered and having no choice.

I'm not offended by it, I just think it implied something that wasn't there. Normally, no big deal, but when they are saying that Joyner looks like his ex-wife (which she did) and then someone says that they liaised, then I think that is implying something (I'm bothered by it because from what I saw Hotch and Joyner had a professional relationship, so why imply something else). I'm not taking a shot at Emily, I just think that the writers were trying to be funny and ended up implying something that they probably didn't mean to imply (of course, having to listen to all the shippers doesn't help much).As for being the youngest, the BAU is a little different than an actual family. I know that a lot of them, if not all of them, see Reid as a little brother, but they have a job to do and they can't go around babying him and holding his hand every time things get a little scary. Now you can make the argument that Reid doesn't want to be babied (replying to joleva75 now), and maybe he doesn't, but he has never seemed to be bothered by it. Same thing in Minimal Loss, Prentiss says it isn't his fault, he just sits there and listens. Doesn't say "I'm fine, are you ok?" or anything like that. He just accepts the babying and moves on. As far as I see it, the babying isn't going to stop until he stands up for himself (doesn't have to be rude or anything, just make it clear that he is a grown man that can take care of himself). It is Reid's job to make that clear, and until he does they are just going to keep on babying him.

Maybe she had already been looked after physically beforehand. Still they could have shown her being taken care of on screen. But, I don't think it's a given that he was fine), I'd say there are examples of Reid standing up for himself when the team gets somewhat (again, in my view, not anything I would define as babying) over protective. Derailed is one, where Morgan wanted Reid to teach him the magic trick to get help rescue Elle and either Hotch or Gideon (I forget) wanted to call off the whole thing when Reid was having trouble. Reid insisted on being the one to do it, and not fobbing it off on someone else. And, The Tribe, where Morgan seemed a little reluctant to let Reid interview Ingrid (the girl in the cult) by himself, but Reid assured him that he could do it.

It's more psychological. Prentiss' conscience is clear. She's got no reason to feel guilt - even misguided guilt. She made a decision that didn't cause anyone harm but herself. I don't think she has any psychological issues of her own as far as the beating went. (which I'm quite pleased with, since I can't imagine they'd make an issue of a male character dealing with physical violence directed at them on the job - and that includes Reid) Guilt is a pretty big psychological issue. Not necessarily more upsetting or less upsetting, because that depends on the individual. I'm not saying poor Reid, he had it so much worse than Prentiss. Not by a long shot. I'm just not convinced that it's a given that Reid was fine. And, Reid did tell her he was sorry, but they were still being held captive at the time.If anything, if I were to rewrite anything, it would not be for Reid to ask if Prentiss was physically okay. Prentiss would have been given whatever first aid immediately after they were on the jet and all that would have taken place long before Prentiss took the time to talk to Reid. I would rather have Prentiss have her own issues with not being able to save Jessie, the daughter of the woman who made the phone call. I could see the scene playing out with Prentiss telling Reid that it wasn't his fault and him reciprocating by being able to tell that she was feeling guilty about what happened to Jessie and telling her that it wasn't her fault. That she did everything possible and got out a bunch of other people. I can't imagine that he actually successfully graduated the FBI academy. I don't doubt he could ace the legal aspects, procedures, policies etc. but the physical part? No way! Quantico has a pretty high standard of what their cadets have to be able to do physically and there is no way around. But it's TV and so I'll just accept he's a full fledged FBI agent. I have no doubt that everyone on the team appreciates Reid's contribution. He has earned his position in the team. It's quite an advantage to have such a genius mind working on criminal cases. Everyone on the team understands that geniuses tend to be a bit difficult and are often way out there. A genius isn't really known for his all-around capabilities. Because of his enormous brain power and how he analyzes nearly everything it's hard to relate to a genius and for a genius it's difficult to relate to a normal person (which includes expressing and understanding feelings). I think that's why the team feels the need to coax him from time to time or reassure him. I don't see it as babying him but more as making him a part of the team on every level.

For Reid fanatics, it is perfectly acceptable. However, not all fans are in love with Reid, and for those of us that aren't it gets annoying to see him being babied/overprotected again and again. I like Reid, but I don't want to hear about him all the time, and I don't think that he needs to be babied over every thing.I don't necessarily think that he has been through more than any other member. First off, we can't really compare because the show has focused more on his past than the other characters, so we have more info on him. However, the others have gone through a lot, too. Hotch has his divorce now, and has implied that he was abused by his father. Morgan lost his father when he was young, and was sexually abused by a man that was supposed to be a father figure. Prentiss had ambassadors as parents, meaning that she would always have to be on her best behavior in public, and a lot of times in private as well. She has also taken some beatings on the show. JJ had the dog mauling, and I think there could be some other storylines that they just haven't gotten to yet with her (like why she has never mentioned her parents). Garcia was shot and almost died. So yeah, Reid has been through a lot, but so has everyone else. Bad things happen to good people, but imagine a world where everyone that had a rough childhood or bad experiences was babied. Everyone would be to busy babying each other to get anything done. He is a grown man, he can take care of himself and he should stand up for himself by letting the team know that. That's my opinion, it has nothing to do with the ability to do his job.

Yeah, if you have watched Silence of the Lambs, it starts off with Clarice Starling doing some PT as a cadet. I doubt that Reid would be out there doing what they showed on there, and that movie came out back in the early '90s, I think (I would think that the expectations have only gone up since then). Could Reid be someone they would consult without having him be an agent? Kind of like how Garcia is listed as an Audio/Visual Technician, not an agent (though a lot of fans see her as an agent, I don't think that she is technically considered one).

How well we handle trauma and stress depends on so many variables: age, family/friend support, mental & physical condition, religious/spiritual background, other hardships we're going through or been through, personal capacity to handle hardships etc. Things affect each person differently. One may falter when another person would just move on. One can't really compare. Personally I think Hotch is mentally very strong and healthy. So is Rossi, though he hasn't had to endure as severe hardship as Hotch had to (at least that's what I've gathered so far). Reid isn't that strong but has developed a great coping mechanism of diving into science (I don't want to go into his drug problem because he gotten out of it and didn't start it himself). Morgan has trust issues and can be a little bit of a hot head, Elle lost it, committed a murder and then lied about it. Gideon didn't handle his hardships very well, especially in the end. I don't think JJ's life has been very rough but nonetheless she's a very stable, mature young lady and she has had Hotch to fall back on when the job got to her. I think the same applies to Prentiss although we don't know that much about her (yet).

On Wikipedia (I know it isn't always right, but still), she is listed as an FBI Audio/Visual Technician. The others are listed as FBI BAU Supervisory Special Agents. If you look at it like that, then Garcia isn't even considered BAU. I look at that as Garcia helping whichever team needs it, BAU or not, though I know that a lot of fans hate that idea because they don't like imagining Garcia working with anyone else.

That is what frustrates me, though. Reid has gone through the most because the writers focus on him much more than anyone else. It is fine for Reid to go through some things (you probably don't believe me, but I actually like Reid), but I like the other characters as well and would like to see more of them.I think Hotch, Rossi, Prentiss, JJ, and Morgan are all plausible. JJ can shoot a gun, she is very stable and intelligent, and she has some athleticism (soccer takes a lot of endurance). However, they could bring in JJ to mediate without her actually being FBI. Morgan gets a little fired up sometimes, but he has experience in the Chicago PD and ATF, has a law degree from Northwestern, and is also athletic. It is tougher to make an argument for Prentiss, even though she showed her toughness, because we still don't know much about her. I can picture a real-life Reid as a consultant, but a guy like that doesn't really seem like a guy that would want to be running out in the field with a gun.

Thank you for the info.I agree with the comment about the younger female fans (and that was mainly who I was referring to with the fanatic comment, young girls who drool over MGG because they think he is hot). Maddy doesn't fall in that category because she actually knows enough about Reid's character to make an intelligent argument. Don't get me wrong, Reid should have a role, but does it really have to be THAT big of a role?You covered my main issue with the comment about Reid having the hardest time. I don't know, it seems like the expectation for what Reid should have done is kind of skewed. Telling Hotch he was okay was exactly the reassurance Hotch needed. Hotch was worried that he hurt Reid. Reid told him he was okay and that he wasn't in any danger of hurting him anyway (You kick like a nine year old girl). He also let him know that he wasn't affected by the nasty words Hotch said, because he knew it was all part of a plan early on. I'm not sure what wasn't comforting about that, or how that was any less comforting than what Prentiss told Reid in Minimal Loss. The situations were different, so the type of comfort had to be different, but as far as amounts, I'd say they were evenly balanced. I'm not sure why one is so much greater than the other. Exactly what was Reid supposed to tell Hotch that would have been the acceptable level of comfort? Reid also told Hotch that he didn't antagonize the situation in Damaged (which Hotch totally did, so that was a pretty big reassurance). And, in both cases (LDSK and Minimal Loss) the balance was also even in the fact that only the two people involved did any reassuring/receiving reassurance. Aside from Revelations, I'd say the comfort and reassurance has been pretty widespread to all of them. I just don't see this imbalance of comfort or everyone rushing to reassure Reid.

And they did make an issue of Reid having physical violence aimed at him, as it was the reason for his drug habit.

Well, first, Reid became a drug addict because he was injected with an addictive drug, multiple times. Not because he was whacked on the foot and violently shaken. And, the psychological trauma was what I saw as what gave Reid ptsd (the drug habit was a chemical reaction, I think ptsd is more in line with what they made an issue of). Not the physical stuff. Reid didn't show any psychological trauma (any of them would have been bloodied from the physical stuff) until he was told to choose someone on the monitor to die. More specifically, watching someone who he didn't name get murdered. He only zoned out after that. I don't count losing consciousness and needing CPR. That's not making an issue of things, that's some semblance of realism -like Prentiss' bruises and Hotch's ear trauma. If Reid's addiction was related to the physical violence, they could have skipped the injections, the flashbacks, the scene of Reid watching an innocent person murdered. They could have just shown Tobias (I never know if I should call him that when it's a situation where he was a different personality) using only physical violence, and then brought up that he was given pain medication at the hospital later and became addicted that way.

Well, I could name one for myself - I mean one time where he handled a situation badly. Elephant's Memory. Where his behavior resulted (rightly) in Morgan telling him to check himself, Hotch reprimanding him twice (and telling him that a repeat performance would get him fired) and JJ telling the sheriff that Reid was out of line. The most comfort (and I'm not sure if that's even an accurate term) was Morgan saying that Reid wasn't the only one to know what it was like to be bullied and listening to why Reid was bothered enough to act like he did - but not to excuse it. I'd say Hotch's conversations with JJ in Birthright fell in a similar vein. But, Reid isn't the only one who makes bad calls, and he does get called on his actions, as the others do. And, the other team members do make efforts to comfort, reassure, and prop up each other as well as Reid.

Gubler needs to stop with the puppy dog eyes too, he's doing it with everyone, male or female! He's an FBI agent not a 3yr old trying to coax candy out of a grown up. As much as I love MGG (and I really do) the later points are mostly his mistakes.

And also to the person who asked why JJ isnt everyones favourite. I bleieve she has just been put on the show as eye candy. she has no real purpose but to be on TV, which any of the others could do. She doesnt talk with the unsubs, she rarely goes into dangerous situations. Mayb half the problem is that she hasnt had a episode devoted to her as much as the others (but NZ is way behind in episodes so may not have seen it yet).

I tend to ignore those kind of mistakes because I enjoy the book, but I know that it bothers some other readers so I have to be careful about what I use from his books.

Same thing happened when I came on...all of a sudden it started showing me new posts. This site has been having issues on and off since the summer Wait you love Emily?! I never would have thought that...
