Does anyone know where Nicole is originally from? I know she is from a military family and I grew up with the Steinwedells and that Bob Steinwedell is in the military. Wonder if she could be his daughter? It would be a small world!! I believe Bob moved to Texas and he remarried years ago and I know he has children. Thanks!!

The Unit is about the special forces meaning the men on their missions and their wives keeping things together and this was the original concept for the series- now it is easily becoming a farce and extremely soapy which takes away from The Unit and what it all stands for .. This interview came across as very fabricated and contrived Now it is more like GI JANE or the A-Team which is completely opposite of what The Unit's supposed to be

Whether Nicole is beautiful or not is not the issue. The issue is do we all like the change in dynamics of the show with her on board. The answer for me is no I do not like the change.
Re:NICOLE STEINWEDELL

I don't think that the producers expected huge changes in the form of those B&S viewers switching shows, at least entirely and not yet. I think that the addition of Bridget, plus more of an emphasis on making the wives stronger and more independent, was partly to appeal to new viewers, as well as reflecting certain changing dynamics in this country and the world. People, not all but a good amount, respond positively to female characters who are smart, capable, and well-rounded. While I love TU, I do have to admit that those have not always been qualities that could be attributed to the women on the show. I think the writers and producers are trying to rectify that now, and that Bridget is, as Nicole herself said in an interview, an actual bridge between the husbands and the wives so that the show, as a whole, could be a bit more cohesive. Whether they achieve those things or not isn't something that can be determined right now, I don't think, given that the season just started and it takes time to make new elements gel effectively. I will say that, at first, I was leery about the addition of Bridget into the show, and the team, because as a woman myself, I usually find attempts to introduce new, supposedly strong female characters into a show to be transparent pandering. In this case, though, I think Bridget is an interesting character and a good addition to the show. She's obviously competent and can get things done, and can provide the guys with intel and access to people and situations they might not otherwise have gotten. I think she serves a real purpose, and I personally don't think that her being added to the show has hurt it at all in terms of tone and the preexisting dynamics between the characters.

PLEASE lose the new chick. I'm a woman and I did not feel offended that there were no women in 'the unit' so why add one now? It wasn't necessary and it cheapens the show. At the very least, you could have added someone realistic instead of a barbie lookalike. Special forces military women do not wear makeup and highlight their hair. You took a perfectly good action show and turned it into a soap opera. Sadly, if she ends up being a regular on the show, my husband and I will not watch anymore.

Re:NICOLE STEINWEDELL

There's some news re: Nicole's status with the show. I'll leave a little space, so if you don't want to know, it'd be a good idea to stop reading now. Okay, I know that this won't make some people happy, but for those of who like Bridget, it's good news: From the Oct. 21 "Ask Ausiello" from Entertainment Weekly's website - Question: I really like the new female member of The Unit, Nicole Steinwedell (Bridget). Is she signed for the full season? -- MikeAusiello: She is now! Although Steinwedell started the season as a recurring guest star, sources confirm to me exclusively that she's now an official series regular. Word is that the actress was introduced in part to make the show more enticing to women, particularly now that CBS has paired The Unit with the female-skewing Cold Case. But executive producer Shawn Ryan says Bridget serves a creative purpose as well. "The show was feeling like two different parts -- the male-mission part and the women-at-home part," he says. "Injecting this character into both sides of it, to us, has made the show feel a little bit more connected."

Re:NICOLE STEINWEDELL

Squirrel1772 , I agree. This is just my opinion, but I think the idea behind the addition of the character is sound - it makes sense that a female could help out on some of the missions. I know that some people were worried that she'd tag along on all of the ops, but we've already seen that that's not the case. And it's true that some of the writing for her has been uneven, but now that her status with the show has been solidified, one would think that that would allow the writers to be more consistent with her and develop the character more. As for the purpose of the character - to connect the storylines - I think it's a good idea to make the show more cohesive, as a whole - that makes it more accessible for new viewers. I know that there are people who don't like the character, but there are also a lot of people who do, so Bridget just joins the ranks of the other polarizing characters. So, the situation hasn't been perfect, thus far, but the show and its writers have had to deal with significant changes, as have the fans. It's taken awhile for the writers to get into the groove of things, but I also think that that's because of the story they're trying to tell. I think that all of the issues that have been raised about storylines that don't make all that much sense or seem unnecessary likely all tie into the big, overarching story that we're probably going to start seeing soon (just speculation on my part). That said, I look at this like Squirrel1772 suggested: I love this show, and if it has to undergo some changes (that some people like and some don't) in order to remain on the air, so be it. I know that mileage varies and that everyone's entitled to his or her opinion, but personally, I don't enjoy every single character or aspect of the show, though I'm more than willing to put up with them if it means that the show gets to live on for more seasons.

First off, the group of writers that sat down and hashed out their storyline arcs for Season Four had this idea that adding a female character would help the show get better ratings. Well, not every idea that writers come up with are good ones and we're here to tell them so. Second, thank God for people who complain. We could still be using lye soap instead of Dove or Irish Spring or hand washing all our dishes instead of using a dishwasher. And third, I don't believe for one minute that anything we post here is going to have any effect whatsoever on the fate of The Unit --whether it is renewed in 2009 or not. It's the ratings and number of viewers watching the show. And fourth, I think that the people on this board who don't like our complaints don't like it because we disagree with them.

Obviously I don't know why their status hasn't changed, but I wonder if it's just because that's the nature of the characters - the writers, for whatever reason - think that they aren't needed/can't be used on a full-time basis. Then, too, it could be beneficial for the actors that portray them. While being a series regular would obviously be a career boost for them, their current status allows them to work on TU while also having the opportunity to work on other shows and projects. Also, I completely agree about eps 7 and 8 - I think that (if it doesn't happen before then) those are the eps that might bring together the elements (some of which have caused confusion amongst the fans) from the eps we've seen thus far, and really show us what the big story is this season.

I've been completely shocked and dismayed at the vehemently negative posts that started right after the season premiere. I don't remember users posting such awful messages during the other 3 seasons. If users don't think the network watch this site and IMDB, then are mistaken. They were watching the Jericho board back in the day. I understand that there are people who don't like the new direction the show's taken and don't care for Bridget. It's been a little difficult to take after 3 seasons of superb shows. However, a little civility goes a long way. And they very well could be trying to expand their fan base to keep it on the air longer. I'm all for that. I tend to not believe all the columnists who are calling for a mid season cancelation or May cancelation. We're only 4 episodes into a season of 22. Hope and Faith remain strong. I'm happy that Nicole is able to secure more steady work in a profession where steady work is not the norm. But hopefully, this move won't mean other regulars will have less scenes.

I have bee thinking about all of the crap that has been talked about Red Cap since her appearance. And then again people say that the show has lost some with the loss of Eric Haney. Well I was watching the 2004 movie "Spartan" and what do my eyes see. Movie info first, Val Kilmer's character is an elite operator you would presume Delta but it is never really confirmed or denied. But in the begining you see Derek Luke chasing Tia Texada (Yes the FEMALE Sgt. from 3rd watch). She was assisting with the selection process. But later in the movie Kilmer's character realizes he needs her help. And with out her his mission would have failed. Was she a Delta Operator? No she was not. Was she helpful? Hell yes she was. Face it guys there are things that women can do so much better than guys.Ok who is going to take my guy card?

If you haven't watched a lot of other TV shows then you may not be familiar with some of the great scriptwriters and the work they are doing on other shows. Jerry Bruckheimer is absolutely superb and others that I can't name right off hand. Anyone who follows the soap operas can tell you that the writers can ruin a soap and take it down the wrong road, and the producers have to get rid of the writers. There is a reason TU has low ratings and that we were on the bubble for renewal, that predictions are already being made about the underperformance of TU. I believe the writers are ruining this show. Just watch NCIS once if you want to see a well scripted show. I do not like what Mamet and the other writers are doing to TU because I believe ultimately their inferior writing will cost us this beautiful show and my enjoyment of seeing Max Martini up on the screen. I say, "Fire the writers" and get some first-class people in there that can write a decent script.

Re:NICOLE STEINWEDELL

This is my opinion and I'm not dissing anyone else's. I must say that since I've been accused of telling people they can't have an opinion. To address some of the items in the last post: I do watch a lot of other TV shows. I watch NCIS and Two and Half Men, among others. Both are excellent sources of good writing. TV writing is something I am not qualified to comment on since I have never done it. I have a vague idea of how it works. And I would need some time to reach out to my sources to get a real answer of how it works. Our Unit writers are no slouches. They have years of experience and have been written on some other great shows. There is nothing inferior about them. You may not like what you see each week, but that doesn't make them inferior. They have an enormous order to fill and I think with less staff this year than last. (Yes, the financial crisis is hurting the network too.) They are doing a very good job. The Unit was on the bubble because it's always on the bubble every year. IMO, only the top 20 broadcast shows ever get an immediate renewal for the next year. You can believe all the speculation and predictions you want. You can believe in the various ratings lists on the net. But the bottom line is: WE ARE ONLY AT EPISODE 5. We have NO IDEA where this story arc will take us this season. None. If you are a fan of this show, as many on this forum and others have passionately stated for the last 3 years, then I beg you to have some faith. Have faith in this mission they're taking us on. Have faith that the best is yet to come! Be patient. Finally, I would not have done as much I have for this show if it was not for the love and respect I have for ALL the talent on screen and off. And I'm not done yet. Please understand that no matter how rough some of the comments have been on Nicole and the first 4 episodes, this show is not interactive. You can complain all you want. But nothing will change. So your choice is to watch it and enjoy it or turn it off. It really is a good show and IMO, the best scripted program on TV. Angel, Haney and Mamet met on Spartan.

Re:NICOLE STEINWEDELL

Roobaby, that was very well said. Sure, it could be argued that some elements of the episodes have been somewhat muddled, but I still think that that's because we've only seen small factors of what is a soon-to-be-revealed main story-arch. I have faith that the writers will pull it all together. And for all of the worries about Bridget, I think the show has been pretty clear so far in showing that her work with the unit is in more of a support capacity - she has gathered information and provided distractions/access to a bad guy or two, but the guys have been allowed to do the main work (as they always have), and I don't think we've seen any indication that that's going to change. Again, I think the writers know what they're doing - they know that they have to balance efforts to appeal to new viewers while ensuring that the show, at its core, doesn't fundamentally change, and that the loyal fans don't feel ignored. There may be some bumps in the road, but I think that the writers are fully capable of working with all of these elements. This is why I'm of the opinion that TU is, if not the best scripted-drama on TV, it's pretty close.

First of all, the ratings are NOT dropping weekly. They are FLUCUATING. We have been holding a steady 9 mil every week since the premiere. The Unit had 9.10 mil viewers this week. But the World Series was on at the same time, different channel. Secondly, Nicole was damn good in this episode. She played her part well and was believable. And is in no way responsible for any flucuation in the ratings. Bridget is a good support person and in this episode she was needed. But ya didn't see her shoot a gun or bash some bad guys over the head. As for seeing ker kick some booty, BRING IT ON!

Re:NICOLE STEINWEDELL

As far as the World Series goes, Marc Berman at Mediaweek seems to be of the opinion that it did cut into TU's ratings a bit; whether that's true or not, I don't know, but at least the ratings went up from what they were last week. Watching last night's episode, I definitely got the impression that Nicole is more comfortable in the role, just as Bridget is becoming more comfortable working with the team. I really enjoyed the way she interacted with the guys - she was able to provide some help, but she didn't alter their overall dynamic or attempt to take the lead. As for the butt-kicking, I completely agree that it will likely happen, but the writers are taking their time about it. I'm sure they are well aware of the...resistance that has been voiced in re: to a woman working with the team, so they're taking it slowly in terms of letting people get used to her presence, both in terms of the team adjusting to Bridget, and the fans adjusting to her, as well. I have noticed that some of the people on various boards who were very much against her at the start, are now slowly starting to accept her. I think that when the adjustment period is over, and people accept (more or less) seeing a woman working in conjunction with the guys, they'll give her more to do in terms of kicking butt and taking names. That said, I don't get the sense that she'll necessarily ever fully take part in the heavy-lifting that the guys do, so to speak. I think she'll be able to play a fairly significant role in some of the missions, but the guys are always going to be the ones who are more in the thick of things.

Do I have to repeat myself over and over again? She is NOT a Delta Operator. She works for the DOD WITH the unit. She was not "just let in". She is SUPPORT. The character you're talking about is Jeremy and he was maybe 22 years old. Part of the Signal Ops, if I'm not mistaken. He was told by Ryan that if he wanted to be in the Unit in the future to stay in the Army and work his way up like all the rest. But decided to join Black Thorn instead, where he became a driver for them. He was out of the Army and working for Black Thorn when he got burned. I hope they keep Bridget for a while longer because her character is growing good on me. She seems to be able to hold her own with the men and women. And judging from the fact that she now is a regular cast member, she ain't leavin' for a while. And before I forget, there is not a stupid thing about this show. You may not like the direction the show's taken thus far, but it is STILL the best scripted program on TV.

I am a woman who LOVES The Unit. But as wonderful an actress as Nicole's character is, I am questioning my adoration for the series. My "feminine" side is plenty satisfied with seeing the wives and their dramas, how they cope with having men in combat. It's not that I don't think women can kick butt, but Nicole's character doesn't behave in a believable way. She's all T&A, and while that's fine, it's too much! Makes it pretty obvious that the show thought "oh, we need more viewers - let's put a pretty lady in The Unit and keep our fingers crossed." She acts and seems like a potential "temptress", most likely to Mack (seems like theyre dancing around some sort of chemistry if you ask me) - I want The Unit members to be focused on their missions, not a pretty girl. They get distracted or involved with her and they risk the lives of themselves, their team members, and their country.

She's not a full-fledged member of the team, so they needed to show exactly how the team could benefit by working with a woman, and though it isn't ideal, it is logical that one role such a woman could play is that of eye-candy, both in terms of providing distractions and by being able to gather intel since people tend to underestimate women who are dressed in skimpy attire. I think that the writers have shown why such a tactic is useful, and that now that that has been established, they're better able to move on and show other reasons why Bridget could be an asset. In fact, I think "Dancing Lessons" was able to accomplish exactly that - she did begin the mission by being in a bathing suit, but later on, she was also able to employ some of her more interrogation-based skills, and she helped the guys with the Josephina situation. I think that, slowly but surely, the writers are attempting to show the various reasons that it makes sense for a woman to be working with the team, and that the reason that they started off with the eye-candy bit was because that was what was expected, and in that way, it was a logical choice. Now that they've shown the obvious reasons why working with a woman on some ops is reasonable, they sort of free themselves to show the other ways that her experience and DOD-related skills can come in handy. As far as distracting the guys is concerned, they've all seen her in her skimpy clothing/disguises, and we didn't see any evidence that that took their minds off of the missions. Plus, though guys will be guys and will obviously notice an attractive woman, I think that the team members are so highly skilled and trained that they wouldn't let something like that distract them or otherwise compromise the job they're doing.

Re:NICOLE STEINWEDELL

I hear you about them apparently trying to feminize the show. I think that's true to the extent that they've expanded the wives' roles and responsibilities (and though I trust the writers, I'm not completely on-board with this yet). And I think that that could very well have something to do with the popularity of that Lifetime show "Army Wives." As for Bridget, it's true that they've had her be T&A for at least part of each episode so far, but other than the occasional skimpy outfit, she hasn't been all that traditionally feminine (for lack of a better term) - she's been focused on ops, interrogated a bad guy or two, helped with Josephina, etc. The point that I'm trying to make (and I don't think I'm doing too well with it because it's late and I'm really tired) is that she's only been "feminized" when she's on the job, not when she's off-duty or when she was helping the wives - she was pretty much all-business. Then again, relatively speaking, she hasn't really had all that much screentime yet, so this is subject to change. As a woman, I have to say that I like the character because she's shown that she's capable of helping the guys, while knowing when to step back and let them do what they do best.

I have watched the Unit since the premiere and I have to say I am VERY disappointed with this season. I hate the new woman and the whole moving the team and all. Who is she and where did she come from? She is anot a believable character and I can't get over them adding her like that. I have missed several shows beacause I hate looking at her and she is a terrible actress. I see some think she is unattractive, I have to agree she is not all that she thinks she is on the show. Last week she even unbottoned her shirt before interrogating that Arab student about the tunnel bomb. She makes me sick. I do not like her mixing with the men and I don't think I would like her hagning out with the wives. She just doesn't click with them. I also hope she is killed off soon before she kills the show. And as far as she and Mack go, I hope he does NOT cheat with that skank. Tiffy makes me mad too but the new woman I can't stand and he is too good for her.

I agree with alot of the others her only contribution to this show is either wearing skimpy clothes , showing off her boobs, and basically loooking like she is playing dress up . I do not find her pretty nor is she generating any chemistry with any of the guys on the show nor is she connecting with any of the wives either. She comes across as very much of an intrusion and she wasn't needed on this series so why was she added ?

Gotta love all the people that have come and gone that are training for years to get into the Unit and they just plop this girl in to the team. What, she intersects with the team once, has a background in intel and POW she's in? I hope this is going somewhere with the overall season plot and isn't a backhanded insult to please somebody that thought we needed some T&A and at the same time appeal to more women. So far I'm not seeing it, and the fact that she was back at base this week calling the shots makes me think they're planning on sticking with her. She's brought NOTHING to the show. She could well be a brilliant actress, but so far she's been a sore thumb and an all-too-easy insert. Ditch her please before you totally kill the show.

Re:NICOLE STEINWEDELL

TVFAnTVStop - I agree. I know that people are concerned that she was brought on to replace Hector, or that she is unrealistic in terms of joining the team, but I think that the show has addressed those concerns. There's never been any mention of her replacing Hector, likely because such a thing is impossible, and everyone involved with the show knows it. And I think the show has made it pretty clear that while she works with the Unit, she isn't one of them. Tonight was a good case in point - she did her job helping the team and she figured out the Colonel's plan, and was therefore able to make a crucial decision that helped him be able to get to Betsy. What she did not do was join the guys out in the field, because that is not an area in which she could help them. She's gotten them access to targets and information over the course of previous episodes, but all of the major action/heavy lifting has been engaged in by the guys, not her. I think the articles that came out about her role in the show prior to the premiere were misleading. She may have been added to the show, but she wasn't added to the team, per se. She's there in a support capacity, which, from all that I've read, is in-keeping with the nature of the roles women play in these kinds of situations. With all of that said, I think she did well in tonight's episode. She wasn't out in the field, but she did provide some useful information and enabled Ryan to carry out his plan. She was useful, but she didn't have massive amounts of screentime, so she didn't infringe on the time given to other characters. It was a truly great episode, and her presence was a part of that, not something that detracted from it.

I'm anxious to see Bridget kick some butt, too, but I don't think such a thing will ever happen with frequency, and I think that the roles Bridget plays in missions will continue to be along the lines of what we've seen thus far. That way, she can be useful, but her actions won't strain the bounds of realism.

No matter how we fans feel about the addition of Nicole to the cast she has been signed on for a full year. That means this whole Season 4 we will have to deal with her being in the show. Personally, I would have preferred TPTB to have added a male as a fifth member to replace Hector. That would have been a logical move to make. It was just kind of lame how Nicole was added. Seeing her in the TOC in Kayla's domain was a little hard to accept. In the Inquisition episode it was a little hard to see her reduced to unbuttoning her blouse to try to help get information out of Khalid. But maybe that is what it will take to attract more viewers in the coveted demographic than we have in the core fan base. We all just want The Unit to be on the air forever.

Why can't he try to be a bit more creative when making a ratings grab?

because a big part of having a hit show is developing new plots/characters to help the longevity of the show. i think they have to bring in new people/concepts/ideas to expand the fan base. i know in doing that you tend to alienate some of the more "true" fans, but to me the TRUE fans will see through it all, and appreciate the facets of the show that they love, and understand that some of the questionable things are there simply to help the show sustain itself. if the show was just the men doing missions every week w/o anything else going on it'd really be like a hardcore a-team of sorts. you have to develop characters for people to love/hate/care, and then do things that make you love/hate/care about that person(s) more. the fact that they were willing to kill off hector should show us all that they're not above killing a member of the team, and although hector (at least to me) wasn't a major facet of the team was still a wonderful part of the show. which to me means they could easily kill off anybody else within another season or two. thats why they need to develop more people now, so by that time we have others to help ease the blow.

Yeah I understand the killing Hector part off.I think it's unrealistic for a spec ops team to never lose a member when they seem to be facing 100-1 odds once per week.I'm just saying that bringing in eye candy just to create more interest in the show used to be a bit below Ryans creativity level. Doing that has been done to death in every recent movie and TV show.I do understand why it was done. I just wish they could have found a more interesting way to get those ratings.

well i think its more than eye candy. i think she's a good soldier (jonas vouched for her), and she's going to be helpful in a lot of various aspects, so she adds to the show. she can help w/ missions that need an attractive woman, she can give support from the operations place (i dont know the technical name for it), and she can work w/ the wives. also we learned that she's an officer, so that also makes her more interesting/valuable. i do hope they add another guy to the show though. show them breaking him in,a nd hopefully they do more than what they did w/ brown.

Bridget (Nicole Steinwedell) has the TU fanatics deeply divided over whether she will destroy the squad. Relax, TU maniacs. Bridget is fresh blood, new story lines, great eye-candy, more ammunition to hook in the male viewers, and the female macho types. The point, TU addicts, is to keep the show alive and vibrant to keep it on the air as long as possible. Do you or don't you want your weekly TU fix. If yes, roll with Bridget. The part was written for a man. She did everything men do: fight, talk sh*t, kill, f*cked anybody she felt like, drank men under the table, commanded other pilots, stressed out, etc. I loved that show (Battle Star Gallactica). That's how they should have made redcap, in another better actress. Just make her be like, "WTF?" Then start kicking azz. She might get beat up but she will fight your azz.

Oh, I agree with the statement she is all wrong. Intro to the show was a really poor choice. I think they might lead to something more dark, like the fact she is a CIA plant. If anyone has watched this show, they would know that there is always a twist in the logic. But who knows, maybe they are trying to broaden the viewing market for women.

She was a horrible addition to the show. She does not belong. There are no, I repeat, "NO" women in Special Ops, and there is a reason for that. Kick her off the show, and stick to the facts. This is the best Military show EVER, and CBS is ruining it with all this daytime soap junk. Stick to the Military plots, stay away from sappy soapy characters, get back to the UNIT!!!

My husband and I are fans of The Unit. My understanding is that casting a woman as an operator was to increase female interest in the show. Well, hello, but if women aren't already interested in Patrick, Haysbert, Martini, Irby and Foley, I doubt if she'll do much for them. This is a smart show, and I'm afraid that adding a female to the close-knit group of male operators will do nothing but make this like every other show on tv. Weak. Why screw with something that works? It's not that Steinwedell is a bad actress, she's just not needed on this show. Her presence will ruin the dynamics that exist among the team members.

This from Spoilertv.blogspot.com: - I'm wondering if Nicole Steinwedell is returning to The Unit? Her character, Bridget Sullivan, seemed interesting in the first half of this season. — NickMICKEY: I had a great-great-great aunt named Bridget Sullivan who lived in Limerick, Ireland, and once danced burlesque for Churchill. She disappeared in the early 1930s when an affair with the local butcher went awry. (Or at least that's the story I heard.) As far as I know, she was not in the CIA. The Unit's Bridget, on the other hand, isn't going anywhere. Look for her role on the team to become more important as this season continues on.

Here is the article: TVGuide.com: You cut your teeth on Dawson's Creek. How has it been seeing some of your former cast mates go on to do the things they have done?Steinwedell: Oh, it's been interesting. That was my first job in Hollywood and I had watched Dawson's Creek in high school, so it was sort of surreal.

nicole's role has to be more sophisticate. I doubt that half of the fans know why she's in Jonas' team. I'm one of them. I only know she's good at seducing arm dealers/terrorists, wearing pretty bikinis/dresses. That's what we saw in the show. Oh and she was annoying in 'Sex Trade'. I think Bob told Red Cap to shut up when Jonas was standing and feeling guilty about not getting back the Ukrainian chicks + using them as part of a trade.Yes i think she's kind of smart. she was able to set up diversion when she's under attack in the hut as seen in 'Sacrifice'. She got some MacGyver genes maybe? Where's her swiss knife?! She violated the military protocol and risked national security just to get the Alpha team/Betsy/Col. Ryan out of Syria (Into Hell part II)?? Bold move, she got guts!!! Even Kayla wouldn't make that call.Okay that's about it.

ok I havent started season 4 yet cause I wait for the dvds, but the reason I was attracted to the show was the realistic aspect of it. Formerly serving in the Army myself, especially serving in the infantry its easy to spot the innaccuracies but for the most part its realistic. I recently heard they brought a women on to the unit and I think it is absolutely absurd. NO women in combat arms PERIOD. the fact that they even interviewed her makes me laugh. they would have read her app. saw female and thrown it away in a heart beat! the fact that they moved it this way says they want to pick up women viewers but seriously they lost major credit and it really does piss me off. In the infantry the men would have nothing to do with a women if she were there and I mean NOTHING.

well the infantry is basically the front lines in a combat zone. every soldier has an MOS which is the job they choose when in the military. women are not allowed to be in the infantry or any form of combat arms. thats the army's rules. combat arms is anyform of direct combat relations, going out into a battle ect. when women go through basic combat training they are taught how to survive and react in a combat zone just as any new recruit is. the difference is men have the job option of after basic going to infantry school and learning the ins and outs of warfare, weaponry and so forth. the infantry is just a stepping stone for other jobs in combat arms like the rangers or special operations. the unit is based off of delta force which is the most elite special forces unit. so women would not even be allowed to apply unless it was a logistical support position. the reason men in the infantry dont care for women to be in combat arms is because alot of them feel it puts the lives of other men at risk. when there is women in a unit these days and that unit is caught in a firefight or a combat situation, the mission automatically changes and the orders are now to get the women out of the line of fire.

Okay, I think I get it. The men would start "protecting" the female(s) instead of fighting the battle. Well, another lady mentioned that and I also feel that way. I also don't like the idea of women mixing with the men on that level. I wouldn't mind learning how to fight, handle and shoot a weapon though. It's always good for women & teens to know how to fight and protect themselves. I know a lot of people may not agree with that statement but, when I think about all the atrocities happening in those warring African nations and the women and children being abused and forced into slavery... I think, "Why don't she cut that man's dayum throat while he sleeps, poison his azz or do worse to him?" Pick up a gun and shoot back , raise a militia or do something. I could think of a lot of things to do. I know, it's cold but war is hell and it's the women and children that suffer the most. Take a look around at war torn nations and see how they suffer from lack of education. They can barely feed themselves let alone scratch out a living. Education is not just book smarts. It's not good to keep females ignorant so a man can be king. But I'm just a girl, what do I know. Okay, I'm done with that and glad I don't have to worry about learning how to shoot or fight. I know I am going to get a "reputation" for this post, but it's true. Thanks for the explanation. Can't wait for the next episode. ShiningHorse

You are confusing the heck out of your military terms, something no one with military service would do. Furthermore, women do serve in the "Special Operations Units" these days, though to my knowledge only in supporting roles. Those supporting roles can quickly become front line combat roles if things go badly, and they often do in the real world. All of which is consitent with the show, if you were paying attention.

The show is not about “The Special Forces”. It has NOTHING to do with Special Forces. It does have to do with a fictional Special Operations Unit called “The Unit” which is loosely based on Delta Force. While there are undoubtedly members of Delta Force that previously served in the Army Special Forces, many did not. Many were Airborne or Rangers or both, but not Special Forces. Confused yet? Most civilians are, and they throw around the terms Special Forces, Airborne, Ranger and so on as if they are universal terms when they are not. How you use them matters. If you use them incorrectly, which you are doing big time...you soundlike you have noclue what you are talkingabout...and everything you say will be ignored by those who do.

Special Forces is a specific organization within the Army. The Rangers is a different organization. The Airborne is yet another different organization. Delta Force is yet another organization, but is not technically called Delta Force, that is a nickname. All of them are Army Special Operations organizations. So the term you should have used when making your argument was Special Operations, and not Special Forces. FYI, when they show the sign at the fictional Army Base that says Special Forces Command, they are NOT referring to The Unit, but rather a different Special Forces Operations Unitassigned to the same base...which admitadly confuses people even more. Having a huge sign on the base that tells the world they are their would be counter productive...their existance is supposed to be classified. From what I read in the book, Inside Delta Force, the real Delta Force shares a base with other Special Operations Units in order to share resources.

It is possible for a Soldier to serve in one or more of Special Operations Unit throughout their career. Some soldiers even qualify to wear an Airborne and/or a Ranger tab without actually serving with an Airborne or Ranger unit beyond completing those schools and completing the minimum requirements to wear those “tabs”. Even more confusing, not all Army Rangers are in the Army and not all Navy Seals are in the Navy. Those organizations both have units within them that recruit from the other services. They also have schools they run which are open to the other services special operations units. So you will see Air Force Combat Controllers and Pararescue Men with Airborne and Ranger Tabs and Army Sodliers with Navy Seal jump wings and tridents and so on and so forth. The branch of service you are can get a little blurry when enter the world of special operations.

Special Operations could refer to a wide variety of units in each of the military branches, the Special Forces is a specific unit in the Army. This show is NOT about them at all. Many Special Operations Units do have women in them. I served in such a unit during the Clinton era. They typically serve in a supporting role, in a supporting unit…but those units are just as much Special Operations as Delta Force or the Seals. Twenty years ago they never would have been allowed to serve in such a unit. However, the rule against women in combat has become increasing blurred, if not outright ignored in recent years. Do women serve in Delta Force? Probably not but that unit is so secretive that you would never know if they did. In twenty years maybe somebody will write about how a woman or several women did. To pretend you know whether or not they do, is ridiculous. If you had inside knowledge into Delta Force, you would not be posting it here.

That said, when I first read about them adding a female character to The Unit I thought it was ridiculous. However, if you watch the show she provides logistics and support in the field, rather than being “a shooter”. Her role is more intel than shooter...and that is very realistic. She deploys, and occasionally is required to defend herself…but she hangs back when the rest of the team goes in for the kill. There is some degree of realism there even if it does seems like a stretch. Technically she’s is not a member of The Unit. She is “on loan” from the Department of Defense, where she presumably works for the Defense Intelligence Agency (they did not specifically say). That too adds a degree of realism. If the mission required a woman for cover, that or the Central Intelligence Agency is probably where they would find a woman with the necessary qualifications.

If they were trying to pass her off as a Shooter, I would share your complaints. But that is not what they are doing at all. So her character has more credibility than a first glance would leave one to believe.
A long explination to be sure. But since so many people screw this one up, and since it is extremely annoying..it merits it.

I found this description of the "warrant officer" rank online:

Interestingly enough, as a Warrant Officer 1 (WO-1) Red Cap actually outranks Sergeant Major Jonas Blane. Likewise, Red Cap and Jonas are both outranked by 2nd Lieutenant Betsy Blane. However, it would be extremely foolish of either lady to presume to give the Top orders relative to an operational mission. You may also find it interesting that senior NCO's usually make more money than WO-1. As a result, the Navy has discontinued the rank of WO1 and only has CWO2-5 among their ranks. The Air Force discontinued all Warrant Officer ratings in 1957.

Warrant Officer 1 is an officer who is appointed by the Secretary of the relevant service (i.e. Army, Navy) and serves via "warrant" rather than "commission". However, Chief Warrant Officers (CWO-2-5) are granted commissions by the President and take the same oath as regular "commissioned officers". However, even a CWO-5 is outranked by the any commissioned officer (i.e. even a lowly 2nd Lt.).

Historically, warrant officer ratings were based on the structure of the British Royal Navy which allowed for non officers to perform the function of officers based on a warrant (which was more like an honorary officer). At that time (circa 1775) there was a distinct difference separating Officers from Warrant Officers. Commissioned Officers were "Officers and Gentlemen". Warrant Officers, being able to be appointed from the "lower classes" were not granted the title of "Gentleman" as part of their Warrant. The issue of "Officer and Gentlewoman" did not exist at that time.

Warrant ratings are usually a single path technical expert type of position. Many Army helicopter pilots are Warrant Officers and they are ususally very experienced and damn good. To give one specific example, a chap named Mike Durant was the pilot of Blackhawk Super Six Four, which was one of two Blackhawks shot down during the Battle of Mogidishu in 1993. He and his co-pilot were both Chief Warrant Officers from the 160th SOAR (Special Operations Aviation Regiment). BTW, two D-boys were awarded the Medal of Honor postumously for their valiant defense of the crew of Super Six Four.

As has been pointed out, while Warrant Officers typically serve as advisers or specialists, they can and do command units or provide support in the field. Intelligence and Battle Field prep are two functions where women almost certainly play some part in real military operations. Their primary roles are not those of "shooters" but that doesn't mean that they can't shoot. It also doesn't mean that they are comic book heroines, like GI Jane. Like their male colleagues, they are serious dedicated professionals doing a difficult and dangerous job.

Of course the writers have been deliberately vague about Red Cap's previous command, not wanting to be tied down too much by reality. There are also references to working for/with DoD. I really love that one since all military departments, except the Coast Guard, are a part of the DoD. The Unified Commanders report directly to the Secretary of Defense and do not report to the Joint Chiefs of Staff or the Secretaries of Army, Navy, or Air Force on issues regarding operations (e.g. Gen Colin Powell was not Gen Norman Schwartzkopf's boss).

So, all military departments are part of DoD. However, the Unit members refer to DoD like it is a different organization, and in a bureaucratic sense it really is. However, they are so intermingled it's impossible to adequately describe the relationship unless you work in it. BTW, the Director of the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) is an active duty Lieutenant General and approximately 35% of DIA employees are active duty military.

So, how did Red Cap wind up working with/for DoD (DIA)? There are a small number of WO MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) that might apply to her circumstances. MOS 180A is a Special Forces WO, however that's not open to women, so we can rule it out. Most probable (pure speculation actually) is MOS 351L ( CounterIntelligence Techinican ). These soldiers can engage in actual intelligence collection operations and combat experience is a plus but not required. They may also represent the Army in investigations/operations with DOD, DOJ, or other Federal, State or Local agencies.

Personally, I don't care that much for Red Cap as a character, but the program has at least kept her activities reasonably realistic, IMO.

Re:NICOLE STEINWEDELL

Sniper, your second to last paragraph is on the right track. Most WOs (with the exception of the aviators), are promoted from the enlisted ranks (typically experienced and proficient NCOs), and there are lady CI and HUMINT specialists in the Army. Typically, when one refers to someone working for DOD, the implication is that they are at the department or agency level and not working directly for one of the service branches.

But, after seeing how the storyline with Whiplash is developing, I unfortunately predict Red Cap is short lived. Pure speculation on my part, but I predict that Whiplash is deep cover to infiltrate the bad guys. My guess is only COL Ryan and maybe Snake Doctor know. That would explain the tension in the closing scene in the team bar between Snake Doctor, Cool Breeze, and Red Cap a few episodes ago- Snake Doctor knows they just pulled a fake rape attempt on Red Cap,who has become a de facto member of the team, and it's a horribly shitty thing to do to a valued team member to accomplish the mission. I predict when the truth comes out, it will lead to her leaving the unit. Note, Ms. Steinwedell is still credited as a guest star. I hope I'm wrong b/c I like her character better than Whiplash, but...my two cents.

Oldfritz sends.

I read that Nicole is a military brat so she has probably lived in quite a few places.

I am an older female and think her character is a welcome addition to The Unit, could make for some very interesting story lines if written by someone with military saavy and experience. And by the way, for those of you who claim there are no women in U.S. special forces...wow, you need to do some serious brushing up on reality! Believe me, you are talking to the wrong people if that's what you think. The women in special forces, while relatively few, are in deep, deep, deep cover...but they are definitely out there!
