I thought these judges never got to see anything but the Best In Show then somehow Victoria out of the blue starts in on JD which was almost a recapp of the conversation that Laurie and JD had? JD certainly did not exhibit any kind of agressive or over powering methods during the maze task, in fact Galaxy was amazing the way he would stay on command which allowed the puppies to catch up. That dog is amazingly trained and doesn't need a treat in order to obey. Although I think Leroy did a great job also, he just ran through the maze and the puppies happened to follow him. I don't believe he paid any particular attention to the puppies as far as Herding or rescuing goes. Oddly enough I think that Presley was the only one who actually was conscious of the puppies as exhibited when Travis directed him to go back into the maze (through the exit) and look for the pups. Presley actually seemed to try to do that Check it out if ya'll watch it again. Just my opinon

Victoria was the one who thinks that her way is the only way. Both of the female judges has a domanate personality.
Re:Judges

And most of all it was UNFAIR!! Because, like another poster said Andrew is a robot, and is not interested in ANYTHIG, besides being doted on by Laurie. I agree, they have already chosen the winner, b/c the dog will stay. But, they are missing the bigger picture, that that was the ONLY dog who was not interested in anything, while the others were jumping out of their skin to play. I also said in another post a well trained dog is supposed to be obedient to others besides the owner, which Andrew clearly is not. That would have been the true dog swap. Let's see if we can get Laurie to get Galaxy to perform tricks, while JD got Andrew to perform tricks. Hmmm...no question on the clear winner on that one. That would have been a much better competition, and Andrew finally would have been bye-bye.

jcnole wrote: I also said in another post a well trained dog is supposed to be obedient to others besides the owner, which Andrew clearly is not.

Sorry, I totally disagree. Many breeds are specifically bred to be very responsive specifically to their owner. Think of a police dog. You don't want someone else being able to take that dog and being able to tell him what to do, unless they have spent time developing a working relationship and bond. In fact, many of the tests of such dogs are that they will follow the commands on their owner in the face of clear distraction and attempts to get them to do something else. There is a reason we have so many different breeds of dog and that's because there is no one "right" type of dog. It's a shame to me to even have a show that seems to be saying that dogs should be a certain way and not another. From what I've seen of Andrew, I have little doubt that given more time than just an hour to adjust to Laurie being gone he would probably be able to work with someone else, that used similar methods (clicker and treats). Trying to get a dog to play with a toy when he was concerned about being left was just laughable!

of all the so called reality shows this one has sunk to one of the worst. I have never seen a show where an objective challenge is set, and then the judges critique on the SUBJECTIVE. Andrew retrieved a ball for JD and he sat in his bed for Travis...and neither of them seemed to have a clue how to properly praise or reward a small dog, and he gave up on them and went to look for Laurie. As for "professional" advice, I have over 20 years training dogs and instructing other people, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that you ask 5 professional trainers a question, you will likely get 5 different answers. I tend to do a lot of work with more standoffish breeds, and all of them will happily work for someone else that *knows* how to handle them and work them properly, and provide rewards for them to consider it worthwhile. They love doing tricks for kids or people in nursing homes. But if someone tries to make them "obey" that they don't know, they'll just turn away and leave. This has nothing to do with the dog being "well trained" or "socialized" and everything to do with them knowing who their owner is.

Re:Judges

We're seeing about 30 seconds of over an hour that each spent with them. So it's hard to say exactly *what* he did with the other handlers (and it's clear from the editing they were going to really play up how "attached" to Laurie he is)....but he didn't look "miserable" in the bed, he kept looking back and forth at Travis, like "I'm staying in the bed, and you're just going to leave me here and make a sandwich?! I'm outta here!" I didn't see either Travis or JD do anything that would really show they understood how to work with a dog trained with methods such as Laurie uses, that would have been far more successful than just trying to get him to play with them. A true test of a good trainer is how well they know how to work and motivate different breeds of dogs...from ones that are toy motivated, food motivated, or even ones that seem to have no motivation at all. Travis at least admitted he didn't have a clue, but I just got a kick of of JD because it's clear he's pretty much used to working with dogs with high play drive and really didn't seem to know what to do with one that didn't have that same motivation. Or perhaps he did know...but his own insistence on not training with treats stood in the way.

But it *does* bother me all the nasty comments and false statements made against a team which has earned its place in the finals just like the others that are there. Like this statement above of yours. This clearly shows YOUR bias against them, because it simply is not true. Laurie clearly AGREES with the judge that Andrew is very attached to her and would rather be with her than someone else, but she adds that he is not nervous and stress panting...which is true. He has done well in many of the challenges, he did a great job on the photo shoot, Laurie and Bill together almost won the puzzle dog bone challenge, he did his job ringing the bell, he did the tricks he was asked to do in the dance routine and to do the painting, etc. etc. To say he's done nothing more than sit-stay shows how *biased* you are against him....or that you simply haven't been paying attention.

Re:Judges

Training any dog takes time, patience and consistence. It is ongoing, not just for a few weeks and then expect to have a trained dog. Some dogs are food driven, some have a play drive, some are happy with praise from their owner. Different training methods. I used food for my boxer because he was food driven, but gradually, the food became less and less available so he knew he had to do it right to get the treat. Now he will get a treat after training but gets plenty of praise in between. It works for him but may not work for another dog. The thing is I don't want to have to carry a box of dog biscuits around with me. JD did a good job with Galaxy and Galaxy responded to him. I can't fault his method just as I can't fault any of them. They trained their dog the way they thought best. Travis needs to keep up with Presley's training. As for police dogs, I believe many police dogs and security dogs are trained using a different language as opposed to the normal, sit, stay, come commands most of us use. This avoids any problem with someone other than their handler giving them commands. I want my boxers to listen not only to me but to other members of my family and my friends. I want a well-behaved, well-rounded dog. That to me is a great American Dog. I do agree with Laurie who said that Andrew is the Greatest American Dog to her and that's the way I feel and I think most dog owners feel about their canine companions.
