David Hyde Pierce; and U2.
PLUS:
The upcoming Emmy Awards on CBS; a recap of Paul and the
band's performance at the Concert For New York City; Dave phones
Stephanie; and a sad farewell to a lovely lady.
Dave congratulates Paul Shaffer on a job well
done in the October 20th Concert for New York City.
Paul was the music director for the event and our CBS Orchestra
performed as the concert's band. The concert raised $30
million and counting for the Robin Hood Relief Fund. CBS will
squeeze the 5 hour extravaganza into a one-hour special
Wednesday night at 10:00. (I sure hope they keep Chris
Kattan!)
The Emmy Awards on CBS:
"It's the least anticipated night of the year! No one's
attending, no one's watching, and everyone thinks we should have
just canceled it long ago.! Watch as B-level celebrities
attend this inappropriate celebration, where everyone pretends
to care about things that just aren't worth a damn in today's
world. The Emmy Awards. November 4th on CBS!"
DAVE PHONES STEPHANIE: What did Stephanie
do this weekend? She went to a farm in Conecticut to celebrate
a Fall day. Dave has photos from the weekend. While Dave
holds up each photo, Stephanie describes. We learn that
Stephanie, Coco, and Mary went on a hay ride for 50 cents
apiece. (Note to self: Next year, go to Connecticut for a hay
ride with the kids. The $3 per they charge in the Metro area
is for the birds.)
The funny photo of the bunch is of
Stephanie and Mary reenacting the opening scene from
"Three's Company" of the two gals and a goat.
KATHLEEN ANKERS:
Sadly, our famed
production designer and dear friend Kathleen Ankers passed away
last Wednesday. Many of you probably know her as "Peggy,
the Librarian." No one on the Late Show
staff was respected and loved more than she. Dave describes
her as "a person who made everybody better." I will
miss holding a door for her and hearing her sweet "Thank
you, dear." She was a dear, special, graceful, and rare
woman.
Kathleen designed sets for:
"The
David Letterman Show"
"Late Night with David
Letterman"
"Late Show with David
Letterman"
"Late Late Show with Tom
Snyder"
"Late Late Show with Craig
Kilborn"
"The Rosie O'Donnell
Show"
The original set for ESPN Sportscenter
MTV's original set.
Kathleen started her career in show
business at the Glasgow Citizens Theater tearing tickets. And
she worked at the Old Vic Theater with Laurence Olivier.
DAVID HYDE PIERCE: I'm liking his
appearances on the show more and more. David tells very good
stories and tells them very well. He told a funny story about
Broadway legend Uta Hagen. David performed with Uta when she
was 82 years old on stage in L.A. Uta took a tumble off stage,
falling into a heap. She somehow managed to get herself back
up on stage to tumultuous applause. Why risk further injury
by getting back up on stage without assistance? For the
applause, naturally.
David then shared a somber moment
as he told the story of his friend and "Frasier"
producer David Angell. David Angell and his wife
Lynn were on one of the flights that struck the World Trade
Center on September 11th. Pierce went to the memorial service
held in New York City yesterday and told a heartfelt story of
the day and of his memories of David and Lynn.
U2: Two songs! First up was "New
York," followed by "Stuck In A Moment." During
"New York," Bono stuck 4 fingers behind his head and
held the microphone skyward. That was his Statue of Liberty.
If you closed your eyes, you would have thought you were looking
at the actual Statue of Liberty.
And that was our show
for Monday October 29, 2001.
WAHOO
EXTRA!

"Are you a real
teacher?"
"Are you a real student?"
I bought myself some pants this weekend. Dungarees. I
tried on a couple pair. I ended up buying the Relaxed Fit.
There's a song there somewhere. "When a girl changes from
bobbie socks to stockings" can easily be changed to
"When a man changes from regular fit to
Relaxed."
What's next for me? Seersucker?
My goal this year is to get my waist size equal to my
length. I either have to lose weight or get taller.
From the October 19th Wahoo Gazette, I wrote
regarding Dave and John McCain:
Right
at the top of the segment, John asks Dave "Do you know what
Osaka bin Ladder's going to be for Halloween?" Dave
recognizes an obvious joke coming and grins back a "No,
what?" John says, "Dead."
Dave
brings up something he remembers Senator John Micatin saying a
day or two after the tragedy of the World Trade Center. The
Senator said, "Whoever did this terrible deed, whoever is
responsible, God may forgive them but the United States will
not."
Osaka bin Ladder? Senator John
Micatin? Let me explain. I was doing the spellcheck upon
completion of writing the Wahoo. (Yes, believe it
or not, I do sometimes spellcheck) I corrected a spelling just
prior to the above and then continued to press "enter"
on the "change" command instead of going back to
"ignore." And that's the way it is.
Dominique and Danielle, my twin
girls, had a day off from school the last week due to a
Superintendent's meeting. They'll have another day off next
week for the same reason. When I was in school, I didn't care
what a Superintendent's meeting was. I was just happy to have
the day off. Now that I'm a parent, I have to wonder what goes
on during a Superintendent's meeting? Is it a big scam for
teachers to have an easy day or do things really get done?
Teachers, Superintendents, I need to know: What goes on at a
Superintendent's Meeting?
Michael Jordan
returns tonight as the Washington Wizards face the New York
Knicks. My prediction? The Los Angeles Clippers will lose.
Best show on TV? "Spongebob
Squarepants." One of the few shows I laugh out
loud to. Put me down for "Patrick" as Best
Supporting Actor.
THE WORLD
SERIES

I'm still
rooting for the Yankees. I'm not too worried yet
but I am concerned. Over the years I've seen the New York
Yankees do just about everything except come back from 3 games
down. To make this World Series interesting, let's go for that.
Outside of that one pitch to Matt Williams in
the 7th inning, that may have been the best game I've ever seen
Andy Pettitte pitch.
What this World
Series needs: More shots of Curt Schilling while Randy
Johnson pitches. More shots of Randy Johnson while Curt
Schilling pitches.
The President is
scheduled to show up at the Yankee Stadium for tonight's game.
The New York City Police Department is already stretched out to
the limit working 12-hour shifts and endless overtime. This
isn't the time for symbolic gestures. With all due respect,
Mr. President, please stay away. The increased traffic you
will bring to the Stadium is enough reason to keep your
distance. We're all exhausted here. Save it. I guess the
NYPD can catch up on some rest this weekend. Oops. The New
York Marathon is Sunday. Nevermind.
