PLUS: announcement from Jon & Kate; the weather at the U.S. Open; a top ten list; Dave sees the birthing of a bison; and Andy Kindler spends some time with college grads.
"....and now, the freakishly handsome...David Letterman!"
ACT 1:
Is there anything bigger in show biz than what's going on with "Jon & Kate Plus 8"? The hype is tremendous. And there was a big announcement on their show tonight. In case you missed it, we have the clip here of the announcement.
Announce:
"And now, Jon and Kate make the shocking announcement that will change their lives forever."
We cut to a clip of Jon and Kate sitting on a sofa. They speak to the camera. What they had to announce is inaudible due to the crying babies in the background.
Announce: "Thanks for watching. Stay tuned for 'Cake Boss'!"
The weather has been dreadful in these parts for the past month. Rain, rain, and then more rain. And it's been a big pain at the U.S. Open at the Bethpage Black golf course out on Long Island. But the weather actually benefited one player.
We see a golfer lining up his putt. He putts and the ball clearly is going to miss the hole. Suddenly, a lightning bolt shoots down from the sky creating a new hole on the green. The ball drops in.
Looks like Thor may have had money on the match.
ACT 2:
During the pre-show Q&A, a woman from St. Louis, Missouri asked "Why are you so mean to Regis?" And she's going to see Regis tomorrow morning. Everyone thinks Regis is such a nice guy, but what many people do not know is that Regis . . . once killed a guy.
And this morning, Tuesday, Regis showed that clip and is now demanding an apology from Dave.
On Regis Tuesday morning, we see the same woman in his audience. She assures Regis that she came to New York City to only see the Regis show.
This past weekend Dave witnessed a miracle. He saw the birth of a bison. The whole thing took about ten minutes: plop, clean-up, and they were on their way.
Witnessing the birth of a bison . . . You never know what each day will bring.
ANDY KINDLER
Andy will be spending this weekend with his family celebrating his mom's 80th birthday. Andy says his mom was always very hip, much cooler than the other moms, and way ahead of her time. She would use expressions that would become popular years later. She was ahead of the curve. When Andy was young, she would say things like, "Andy, someone left the phone . . . . 'off the hook!'" And she would say, "Andy, come inside. Your friends are . . . . 'in the house!'"
My mother coined the phrase, "Yo yo yo, back off, girlfriend! Talk to the hand."
What does Andy have for us tonight? Andy recently spent some time with college graduates. College grads are always enthusiastic and full of hope. Andy tried to tamp down that enthusiasm. Someone has to.
Andy talked to Nick from NYU, majoring in film;
Jaclyn of Rutgers majored in psychology;
Liynaa of St. Francis College, majoring in broadcast journalism;
And Nick if the University of New Hampshire, majoring in entrepreneurship.
Nick from NYU was a bit creepy, but in the film industry, creepy is hot right now. The other Nick, from New Hampshire, studied how to be an entrepreneur. I don't know how good a major that is, but I would like to meet the guy who convinced the University of New Hampshire to make it a field of study. Now that's what I call an entrepreneur!
Actually, I imagine a major in entrepreneurship involves everything in business, sales, psychology, art, and independent thinking. It's probably a very good major.
Andy noticed that Nick the film student had listed on his resume a former job of his was "dispensing popcorn." I laughed, because when I use to interview interns, I would go straight to the bottom of the resume and ask about their job as a kennel cleaner, McDonalds drive-thru clerk, valet parker, and bus boy. I was always curious about what they had to say about that job. I also figured that if they did that kind of job at least once in their life, they knew what work was.
Andy will be performing at the Acme Comedy Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota, July 7th through the 11th. I always enjoy Andy's visits.
ACT 3:
TOP TEN: Signs Mayor Bloomberg Has Gone Nuts
-he recently called a reporter "a disgrace"
-he turned Times Square into a pedestrian mall
-decided to run for a third term, even though there was a two-term term limit.
Signs Mayor Bloomberg Has Gone Nuts
7. Just gave the Yankees a billion dollars to build another new stadium
3. Often seen lurking around the city at night in a black cape
SAMUEL L. JACKSON: He's the host of the 2009 ESPYS, to be shown on ESPN on July 19th. Sam is a big golf nut and loves to play the game. He's not a big fan of the golf etiquette, though. He respects the game, but doesn't always follow proper protocol. For instance, when he drives the ball, he goes and gets it without always waiting for those in his foursome behind him to drive theirs. He's not an impatient golfer; he just likes to keep things moving and doesn't like to hold things up. Some years back he was golfing with the late Bernie Mac. Sam drove his ball and followed. Bernie was up next. Sam was supposed to wait till all had teed off, but he didn't wait. Bernie lined up his shot, drove the ball, and hit Sam right in the middle of his back. Sam went down like he was shot. Did he learn his lesson? Not really. Sam still walks ahead but now checks behind him to see if he should get ready to duck behind a tree.
He learned a good golf lesson from pro Greg Norman. Sam now golfs in a lot of celebrity tournaments with crowds watching. Greg suggested for Sam to aim at the gallery far down the fairway. The crowd is often right along the fairway and if the ball hits a patron, the ball will stop and you'll get a pretty good spot to shoot your next shot.
Yes, golf can be a vicious gentlemanly sport.
Dave asks about the bee hive Sam sent Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds as a wedding present. When Sam worked with Scarlett on a film, Scarlett showed great concern for the dying honey bees that was making the news. Sam decided to send her some beehives. Ryan Reynolds talked about the beehives when he was on the show last week. I liked how Sam through in the line that I don't think many picked up on. Sam says he sent his assistant out to pick up the bees. I liked that. You know you're a big-time celebrity when you can send your assistant out to pick up some bees.
ACT 5:
ANNOUNCE: "Tune in tomorrow when Dave is joined by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, and U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover.
Now it's time for 'Is Sue Hum Drunk?'"
Cut to Sue Hum: "A little"
Announce: "Atta girl, Sue! We'll be back with more bloopers and practical jokes."
ACT 6:
EMERIL LAGASSE: He has a new book, "Emeril At The Grill: A Cookbook For All Seasons." He can also be seen on the Planet Green channel on "Emeril Green", Mondays thru Friday at 8:00 PM.
Tonight, Emeril prepared Chipotle BBQ Oysters with Homemade Salsa Fresca, which can be found on page 111 of his new book. And just for you Wahoo readers, the recipe can be found below. Bon apptit!
ACT 7:
THE BPA, WITH IGGY POP: From The BPA's new album, "I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat," The BPA and Iggy Pop performed the energetic "He's Frank."
And that was our show for Monday, June 22, 2009.
We booked the U.S. Open golf champion Lucas Glover for Tuesday during Monday's show. We had to re-write the ACT 5 promo to include Lucas Glover. Our announcer Alan Kalter is a huge golf fan. Loves it. He taped the final 18 holes of the U.S. Open earlier in the day and was going to watch it when he got home. He made sure not to listen to the radio or watch the TV so he'd be able to watch the final day of competition without knowing the winner. He wanted the suspense. And then I handed him the re-written ACT 5. DOH!
I was outside Philadelphia this weekend to watch my 7th grade girls play in a basketball tournament. They won 2, lost 2. One loss was a heart breaker. Our Rockets were up by 5 with a minute left. The other teamed banked in a 3-pointer and then with 8 seconds left scored on a layup and was fouled on the play. They made the free throw. Rockets lost 51-50. Ouch. I think these tournaments are tougher on the parents than on the kids. Luckily, in that nail-biting loss to Fencor, parents on both sides were very well behaved. This isn't always the case. Some games can get ugly.
And then afterwards I tried to impart a life lesson to my girls on how even the best in the world lose a lot of times, such as Tiger Woods. These things happen. By the time we got back to the hotel we were all feeling a bit better. But really, I'm getting tired of these life lessons. After months of games, my life lessons are down to, "Hey, it is what it is."
Between games on Sunday, I went out to find a Sunday paper. We had 4 hours between games and a good Sunday paper could eat up a lot of that time. So I drove through town looking for a place to buy a newspaper. And I drove and drove and drove. I couldn't find a newspaper! And I was in a very commercial part of Pennsylvania. What's with the Philadelphia area? After driving miles and miles, I found a Rite Aid pharmacy and got the last newspaper on the stand. I was hoping to find another, more tabloidy newspaper, but there was none. Now, I wasn't going to mention my search for a newspaper but last night, Monday, I went to sleep listening to sports radio WFAN with the overnight host, Tony Paige. Paige has a 9-year-old son who plays soccer. Tony was telling the story of going to Hershey, Pennsylvania this past weekend to watch his son in a soccer tournament. Since Tony is a sports talk show host, he needed to keep abreast of what was going on in sports outside of his son's soccer tournament. He said he went out to look for the Sunday paper and couldn't find one in all of Hershey. He too traveled miles and miles. He finally found the last Washington Post in a store. But the Post was an early edition with no information on the Mets and Yankees from the night before. I had to laugh that Tony Paige and I had the same problem Sunday morning looking for a Sunday newspaper . . . any newspaper. So what's up, Pennsylvania? Don't you have a Sunday paper? And if you do, why do you make it so hard to find?
The above story probably means nothing to anyone but me and Tony Paige.
Chipotle BBQ Oysters with Homemade Salsa Fresca
(from Emeril at the Grill, page 111)
48 fresh oysters in their shells, scrubbed well under cold running water
Chipotle BBQ Sauce (recipe follows)
Homemade Salsa Fresca (recipe follows)
1.Preheat a grill to high.
2.Shuck the oysters and discard the top, flatter shells. Return each oyster to its bottom, deeper shell. Place the oysters on the grill, shell side down, and cook until the oysters begin to curl around the edges, 2 to 3 minutes. Carefully spoon about a teaspoon of the Chipotle BBQ Sauce over each oyster, and continue to grill until the oysters are just cooked through and the sauce is bubbly around the edges, about 2 minutes longer. Transfer the oysters to a platter or to serving plates, and top each one with a teaspoon of the Salsa Fresca. Serve immediately. (Careful-the shells will be hot!)
4 main-course or 8 appetizer servings
Chipotle BBQ Sauce
(from Emeril at the Grill, page 112)
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon dark Asian sesame oil
1 tablespoon molasses
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 teaspoons chopped chipotle chiles in adobo sauce
1.Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the mixture starts to become syrupy and dime-sized bubbles form, 12 to 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly.
2.Transfer the sauce to a blender or food processor, filling it no more than halfway, and place a towel over the top of the machine. While exercising caution (hot liquids can expand when being processed and force the lid off a blender), pulse a few times; then process on high speed until smooth. This will keep up to 1 month.
About 2/3 cup
Homemade Salsa Fresca
(from Emeril at the Grill, page 112)
1 cup peeled and chopped tomatillos or seeded chopped tomatoes
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
1/4 cup minced red onion
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1 1/2 teaspoons minced jalapeno
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl, and mix together thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. This will keep up to 2 days.
About 1 1/2 cups
Chipotle BBQ Oysters with Homemade Salsa Fresca: You got all that? It's on my list for the summer. And there is a lot more good stuff in "Emeril At The Grill." Make this the summer you go from a "hack of a griller" to a "heck of a griller" and let Emeril show you the way.
Hey, horse racing fans, Letterman's Humor ran in the 6th race at Delaware Park on Monday, going off at 12-to-1. How did Letterman's Humor, the #2 horse, do?
Here's how it was described:

Letteman's Humor finished in 4th. But he's been running well the past month.
