Eiffel Tower and Raffles/Oriental/Ritz rolled into one Tim, Calgary, Canada
This is a great city (Emirate) with many modern-day architectural marvels. Despite the steep entry fees, you must visit the Burj Al Arab. Disregard all naysayers who call it gaudy and appreciate the detail invested into making this hotel the grandest in the world. (Believe me, I have seen most of the other great hotels of the world and they do not even come close.) Try to meet someone on the inside, befriend them and have them take you on a tour of the hotel. Ask about seeing the ballroom. Simply amazing, but beware of the cost: we spent $350 on a lunch for two of us that did not include alcohol. In my opinion, it was worth it to see the sight: it is a modern day Eiffel Tower and Raffles/Oriental/Ritz rolled into one!
Oh yeah, do not miss a visit to the Dubai Museum, which is a simple, 2-3 hour visit during the heat of the day and provides a fantastic understanding into the history and settlement of Dubai. Finish off the evening with dinner and a sheesha (even if you don't smoke) at the Kanzaman restaurant in Bur Dubai
