ROBERT A'S DATE: A ROLLER COASTER OF A FIRST DATE
When his first fund-raising effort--lying prostrate on the sidewalk to collect money for his own funeral--fell flat, Robert, originally from Austria, had to switch to plan B: posing and flexing his pecs for appreciative women on the boardwalk. The plan worked, netting the fitness model from Los Angeles the sum total of $40.25, with which he took Lisa to the Santa Monica pier for their date. As they strolled along the pier, the two seemed at a loss for words. Lisa finally broke the silence by suggesting they go for a ride on the roller coaster. The muscle-bound Austrian could still only muster a few words. After the roller coaster, Lisa stifled a yawn while Robert bought her tickets for the bumper cars. Their date over, Robert stated, "This is the beginning of something. I love her. I really love her."
Embarrassed by the screening of his Date, Robert smiled shyly. Laura brought him back down to Earth, shattering whatever civility had existed on the stage. "I despise you," she remarked, "She couldn't even look at you. She was bored to death. How could you not see that?" For once, Kimberly agreed with Laura. "I just wanted to save her from you."
Robert then attempted to explain that if he wasn't Mr. Right, they would discover that for themselves. Whether it was the Austrian-born Robert's difficulty with English, or just nerves, the message was a bit garbled, and the girls had trouble making sense of what Robert was saying. Lisa explained, "I think you're too into physical appearances… In the future we need to talk more."
DOMINIC'S DATE: ZOO STORY
Dominic set up a massage chair on the boardwalk and offered rubdowns. One woman implored him to not touch her, but many others paid for his skills. He performed so well that one satisfied man described his massage as "better than sex." With kudos like these, it's no wonder Dominic earned a respectable $68.22. For their Date, the recent college graduate and bartender took Lisa to the zoo, where they talked while watching the animals, eventually ending up arm-in-arm. Lisa loved Dominic's story about his parents meeting in a car accident: "They nailed each other in a corner." The physically-affectionate date progressed so smoothly that Dominic began skipping through the zoo.
Laura started things off: "I think he's sweet. I think Lisa's attracted to you. I mean, everybody's attracted to you!" Many women in the audience proved Laura's point by screaming and cheering for Dominic. Touching upon his skipping through the zoo, she continued, "I hope America keeps you around, because next week I'm hoping to see the man behind the boy." Kimberly countered that Dominic was simply too young to get married. The stone-faced young man defended himself, saying a man's maturity shouldn't always be measured by age. The audience cheered in agreement. Lisa wasn't far behind, claiming no matter how old he was, Dominic was definitely "a man's man."
ROB'S DATE: OPERA MAN
Sporting dark glasses, Rob, the uniform sales representative from Hermosa Beach, California, sang opera on the boardwalk in his effort to raise money to take out the "woman of my dreams." But opera wasn't all Rob had to offer, as his hip-hop and dancing skills came out in full force. His singing skills hauled him a whopping $95.43. The studio audience erupted in a torrent of cheers when his total was revealed.
Rob took Lisa out for sushi, determined to treat her "like a princess." Over dinner, he admitted he wasn't as close with his parents as he'd like to be, then told Lisa that his grandma was the most important woman in his life. After dinner, Rob took Lisa to the bar, where they drank cocktails, but ended up spending a little more money than Rob intended. As Lisa looked on, Rob glumly gave the bartender a tip which he realized was "a little slack."
The friends' critique started with a bang when Laura stated, "95 dollars! 95 dollars! I think you're just a little too impressed with himself…. I don't think you bore to death, but I think you exhaust her to death." Kimberly was disappointed he didn't tip the waiter well enough. For his part, Rob stated he couldn't wait for another date with Lisa, and she appeared to second the sentiment, telling her friends that she knew he felt badly about not having enough money left at the end of their date to leave a good tip.
PAUL'S DATE: A COUPLE OF KIDS
A playwright and professor from New York, Paul advertised with a placard describing himself as "Below Average Music Guy" while playing guitar for mildly impressed passersby on the boardwalk. When he was finished, he seemed almost surprised to have collected $43.08, stating a simple "son of a bitch," which made the studio audience laugh. On his limited budget, Paul took Lisa to the park, where they toasted each other's beauty. He opened himself up to her, claiming," I like you, and I kind of don't like the fact that I like you." He then serenaded her with an original song whose chorus left no doubt as to the object of Paul's desire: "My little Lisa." As the date wound up, the two drew close for an intimate kiss while Paul described the two of them as "a couple of kids just having fun."
Laura was stunned, and told Lisa, "I can't believe you fell for that cheesy line. He's probably used it a million times. 'I can't believe that I like you.' No way!" The expression on Paul's face said it all: he did not like what the girls were sending his way. Kimberly only added to his grief, saying he seemed more concerned with being cool and promoting himself than winning Lisa's heart. As a final humiliation, she added, "Let me let you in on a little secret: Lisa hates to be sung to."
That was it: a final punch to Paul's already-bruised ego. Paul calmly composed himself and replied that he appreciated their honesty and that he'd truly been inspired by Lisa. The audience felt Paul's words, and cheered and clapped for him. As for the source of Paul's inspiration, Lisa said she'd had the best time with him and was definitely looking forward to seeing this artist again.
TO LIVE AND LOVE ANOTHER DAY
Brian then asked each of the guys to reveal which of the other guys they believed no one in America would vote for. The consensus was clear, with Robert A.'s name turning up on almost all the cards, except, of course, for Robert A., who wrote Paul on his card, and Evan, who voted for Scott. The audience gasped as Robert's name appeared over and over. He retorted, "I feel honored." Laura agreed with the guys' consensus: "Isn't it obvious? Robert A." Kimberly thought Ken was the one who should say goodbye as she felt the date had been so boring.
Brian then reminded America that theirs was the vote that counted most: "It's time for you to tell us which guy is right for Lisa. The nine with the most votes will make it through to the next round. The one with the least votes will be dumped live on next week's show. Voting will start at the end of the show. If you're an AT&T Wireless customer, then text message. Voting will remain open for at least two hours." Tune in next Tuesday at 9 pm ET/PT to find out who Lisa--and America--will say goodbye to, and which lucky nine will live on "to love another day."
