The Treasure Leads to a Shocking Discovery

The Black Crew assembles the three pieces of the skull and discovers a map on the back of it, which points to a cave where the treasure is buried. The Black Crew arrives at the cave first and wades through a foot and a half of water as they descend into the caverns. Louie eventually finds the treasure underwater and pulls it out.

Jay is happy to see the Black Crew return to the beach with treasure. After Christa fires the blunderbuss, the Black Crew opens the treasure and they're shocked to find no gold. Louie reads a note inside the treasure written by the smuggler, which says, "Captain Steel, I have betrayed you. Gold means power and now I have both." As the crew reels from this revelation, Louie states, "The parable of this Expedition is never trust a smuggler."

While everyone else bemoans the fact that they got nothing today, Jay realizes he got exactly what he wanted by throwing the Expedition: power. When the Red Crew returns below deck, everyone is oblivious to Jay's betrayal. "I don't feel like my game play is unethical," Jay explains. "It's a pirate ship. I came out here to play a cutthroat game." Up on deck, the Black Crew returns with no treasure, but Ben takes comfort in the fact that Christa remains Captain.

Jay Swindles Ben

When Ben heads below deck, Jay is in a gambling mood and wants to play "High Card" for $500. Since Ben didn't receive any gold, he's up for it. Jay places a deck of cards on the table, picks part of it up and draws a Queen while Ben draws a two. Jay wins and they decide to play again, double or nothing.

However, Ben doesn't realize that Jay is setting the deck down skewed each time so he knows where the Queen is and can repeatedly draw the same card. Ben shakes his head and laughs as Jay pulls a Queen three separate times. "If it comes down to being Pirate Master, I feel like I'm mentally superior to Ben," Jay later comments. "Maybe it's age. Maybe it's education. I'm not sure. But at the end of the day, I don't feel like Ben is a threat to me."
