When Ben starts his defense, he admits to getting ahead of himself by badmouthing Christa and also tries to appeal to Jay when he addresses their close friendship. "I'm not ready to go," he says to his fellow shipmates. "When you cut me adrift, you're cutting my dreams and my hopes. It's not just treasure at stake here, it's my whole life…I want this with every tiny piece of my body and soul. I'll do whatever it takes for you guys to trust me."

Cameron asks Jay about his bond with Ben and Jay brings up the fact that Ben had tried to discredit him earlier. "How do I trust somebody who was ready to cut me adrift without even blinking?" he asks. "Do I have it in my heart to give him another chance and if I do, is he gonna come up behind me and bury one in my back?"

Jay and Louie each cast their ballots for who should be cut adrift and the result is a tie, so Christa must make the decision alone. After thinking about it, she bases her decision on something she said earlier.

"I did say that I would want to be here in the end with the strongest competitors," she points out. "And I feel as though Ben is a stronger competitor. So, I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to cut Laurel adrift." With a heavy heart, Christa cuts Laurel adrift while Ben rejoins his crew and gives a heartfelt thanks to Jay for saving him.
