Ben Bailey, John Roy & Dwayne Perkins
Ben Bailey performed first in the Comedian Semi-Finals tonight, telling observational jokes about behavior. Carol Leifer gave Ben 4 stars, explaining, "I liked you last time; I like you this time." "He made me laugh," agreed Kelly Rowland, also giving Ben 4 stars. "You're from Venus and I'm from Mars when it comes to comedy," quipped Naomi Judd as she gave Ben 3 stars, "But you're growing on me." Ben Stein gave Ben 3 stars, pronouncing him "incredibly original and likeable; just not that funny."
Second up tonight was John Roy, whose routine focused on ethnicity. Carol Leifer gave John 5 stars, telling him, "You're so unique and so clever. Your material is so great." Kelly Rowland agreed again, also giving John 5 stars and adding, "You were wonderful." "Very incisive. Laughter is good medicine, and I feel better," commented Naomi Judd, giving John 4 stars. "Really, really funny; really, really original," said Ben Stein, who gave John 4 stars.
The third Comedian Semi-Finalist was Dwayne Perkins, who joked about being a web designer. Carol Leifer gave Dwayne 5 stars, explaining, "I think you're terrific. I just didn't like it as much as last night." "Website!" affirmed Kelly Rowland, giving Dwayne 5 stars. Naomi Judd gave Dwayne 2 stars without comment, and Ben Stein gave him 5 stars, adding, "the stereotype broke, and made something beautiful and new with it."
When the judges were finished scoring, John was in front with 18 stars, and the home audience audience kept him there. John Roy won the Comedian Semi-Finals with 33 stars and will stand up with Loni Love in next Thursday's Finals at 8pm ET/PT on February 6.
