Jon Cruz Declared Ultimate Young Dancer Champion
Nineteen-year-old Jon Cruz from Riverside, California won tonight's Young Dancer STAR SEARCH BATTLE OF THE CHAMPIONS, along with the $100,000 Grand Prize. Jon, already Champion of Tournament 2, performed first, and his gyrating street-style number inspired Naomi Judd to declare him "an American original!" Tournament 3's Champion duo, Candace Rodriguez and Brandon Bryant from Miami, Florida, were up second, and danced a sensuous pas de deux. Ben Stein gave Candace & Brandon "5 super-sensuous stars," and the two other judges gave similar scores. The three judges (there was no guest judge tonight) enjoyed both Young Dance acts so much that they were unable to choose between them, and the two Champions were tied with a perfect 15 stars each. It was up to the home audience to break the tie.
The home audience rose to the challenge and made the decision. It was a close call, but with 28 stars, Jon Cruz, already winner of Tournament 2's $100,00 Grand Prize, was declared Ultimate Young Dancer Champion in the STAR SEARCH BATTLE OF THE CHAMPIONS and dances home with an extra $100,000. |
