Winners' Circle Showdown: Mark Mejia vs. Spensha Baker vs. David Archuleta
Mark Mejia won tonight's Junior Singer Winners' Circle Showdown, guaranteeing him a spot in the Finals. But before the competition took place, all three Junior Singers reacted to the news that they would be competing against each other. Mark Mejia said he was "really shocked" by the twist, while David Archuleta admitted that he didn't "like the idea of competing against each other." Spensha didn't let the twist in the competition faze her, and said, "I'm here to accomplish my goal, which is to win STAR SEARCH."
11-year-old Mark Mejia from San Diego took the stage first with his rendition of "MacArthur Park," originally sung by Donna Summer. Judge Naomi Judd called Mark "the poster child for STAR SEARCH," while Matti Leshem called his performance "magnificent!" Up next was Spensha Baker, the 10-year-old from Killeen, Texas who made her way into the Winners' Circle in the first week of competition. She attempted to win a free pass to the Finals by singing Whitney Houston's "I Believe in You and Me." After two stellar performances, David Archuleta, who has successfully defended his spot in the Winners' Circle in the last two weeks, sang "Ain't No Sunshine," by Bill Withers. When all the scores were in, Mark had 15 stars, Spensha had 13 stars, and David had 14 stars.
The home audience got the chance to hand out some stars as well, and they agreed with the judges, giving Mark a total of 28 stars and a free pass to the Finals. Spensha and David will return to STAR SEARCH to be challenged by newcomers on Saturday, February 21 at 8pm ET/PT.
