America Declares Mark Mejia Grand Champion

Eleven-year-old Mark Mejia won tonight's Junior Singer Finals, and the $100,000 prize! Before the competition, Mark said he was "really, really excited" about the competition, and admitted that he might feel "homesick not being on the stage anymore." Ten-year-old Spensha Baker remarked that STAR SEARCH was "an experience [she] won't forget" and looked forward to performing in the Finals, saying, "I just want to get out there and sing!" Kevin Francis, who joined the Winners' Circle three weeks ago, admitted to some backstage jitters, but said it usually goes away when he hits the stage, adding, "I just sing my heart out!"

Kevin Francis was first to take the stage in the Finals, singing "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," by The Temptations. Naomi declared him a "Motown revivalist," and Matti declared it Kevin's "best performance ever." MC Lyte agreed, calling it his "all-time-high performance." Next to perform was Spensha Baker, who sang "Lean on Me" and got the Judges' praises. MC Lyte said "I want them to vote for you. You're a star," while Matti Leshem said, "It's all you; you're my choice!"

Third to step up to the mic was Mark Mejia, who sang Donna Summer's "Last Dance" in a performance that Matti called "terrific" and MC Lyte described it as "full of energy." Naomi called Mark "the poster child for STAR SEARCH," adding "I want them to vote for you."

The audience agreed with Naomi, giving Mark 12 stars and the $100,000 prize. Congratulations to STAR SEARCH Grand Champion Mark Mejia!
