WIGGING OUT
While the rest of the Studio 54 team works on the interior of the club, Julie and Tommy are put in charge of finding costumes for their extras. After combing through racks of clothing, the duo's next stop is a wig shop, where Julie is rattled when the discussion turns to drag queens. Tommy informs the shop employee that Julie is from St. Louis, as if that should explain everything. "It's like being from Iowa or something," says Julie. Tommy retorts that, "It's like being from Mars."

Julie continues pushing Tommy's buttons when she tries to get him to don a wig. "She enjoyed and relished teasing me," says Tommy. Later, Julie makes a call from their cab and asks Tommy, "Is everyone in this whole city gay?" Tommy is clearly insulted and suggests that Julie learn how to talk to gay people. "I'm surprised you're in the fashion business," he remarks. "Am I the first gay person you've ever met?" Julie notes that he's the first gay person she's ever spent this much time with.
