Amy - Apple Glass Vase

Materials:

Glass vase or bowl
1 cup sugar
6 Apples
Lemon juice
Mandolin slicer--A French Mandolin is a kitchen gadget (hand slicer) that
slices, juliennes and grates fruits and vegetables with ease.
Pastry brush
Pillar Candle (optional)

1. Clean and dry the glass vase with soap and water.
2. Slice the apples, top to bottom, with the mandolin slicer on the thinnest setting. Place the apples in a bowl of lemon juice and water to prevent browning.
3. Make a simple syrup using one cup of sugar to one cup of water.

  • Put one cup of water in a small saucepan.
  • Add one cup of sugar.
  • Heat the mixture to a boil while stirring.
  • Reduce heat and continue to stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture turns clear.

4. Let the syrup cool until it is safe to handle. 5. Brush the vase with the simple syrup and place the individual apple slices in a pattern on the glass. Let the apples overlap to create different shapes and effects.
6. Add a pillar candle to create a hurricane lamp.

Your apple vase will dry, shrink and brown in about month. In the mansion the vase changed a little everyday and I really liked the antique patina the vase developed. Spray the outside to make the vase archival and prevent browning or use hot water to wash off the apples and try a different fruit every month.
