Camellia Hat

I saw an antique hat at the fabric store that was perfect for our costumes. The fabric store owner would not let us purchase the hat so I quickly made a sketch so I could make my own version. The construction is very similar to making a tissue paper flower.

Materials
1 yard silk chiffon or organza
needle and thread
stiffener-starch or clear varnish

1. Cut 10-12 large fabric petals in the shape of a butterfly/bone (large round ends with skinny middle section.)
2. Layer the fabric pieces to form a complete circle and stitch the pieces together through the center.
3. Pull the thread and tie in a double knot. The pieces should become bunched up in the center.
4. Pull up each layer and spray with stiffener to hold the flower shape. Stitch random pieces up to support the flower petals if you don't want to use a stiffener.

Attach the hat to hair with MANY Bobbie pins.
