Covered Box
The challenge of wrapping a box without using paper forced us to think outside the box. Most of us didn’t have to think very far for an alternative and found the answers in fabrics, ribbons, leather and trims. Equipped with a glue gun you can use dried flowers, pasta, popsicle sticks, even leaves to decorate the box’s exterior. I chose to use the remaining remnants from the second cannibalized bedroom comforter that already had pastel silk ribbon flowers embroidered on it.
By centering the flower arrangements on the top and underside of the box lid as well as the inside bottom and underneath, the box had balance and form. Contrasting strips were used to fill in the sides. When cutting out any piece, be sure to add in the seam allowances (1/2”) to tuck under and glue or to sew. I sewed the top cover on three sides like a pillow and slipped it over the lid. Then I sewed the inside bottom to the inside sides and the inside side’s tops to the outside sides. Slip all of this on the box and hot glue the joining areas, being careful to tuck edges under neatly.
Hot glue bottom edge to underside. Prepress final bottom cover edges under and hot glue to bottom of box. On outside, glue fringe trim along top edge. Glue flower petals in place. I enjoyed this project and will continue to cover bare items in unconventional ways. Too much fun!
