AU REVOIR MICHELLE
After Michelle, the 26-year old pastry chef from Dana Point, California, insists upon controlling all food preparations for Team Artisan's French-themed affair, she is held accountable when the party is a flop and becomes the second player eliminated by her teammates.
THE PERFECT HOST
It's a new morning at the Estate, and the players are ready for their next project. As host Joan Lunden greets the players, she sets the tone of the next team challenge by stating that all great stylemakers know how to throw a great dinner party. An easel reveals a list of six options divided into three sections that each team must choose from: "Red" or "White," "Little" or "Big," and "French Inside" or "American Outside." The Crafty Beavers (Heather, Denise, Mychael, Amy and Mitch) are given first choice as they won the previous week's apple challenge, and choose "Red," giving Team Artisan "White". Team Artisan (Darlene, Michelle, Kimberly, Margo and Dawn) select "Little," leaving "Big" to the Crafty Beavers. For the last choice, the Crafty Beavers choose "American Outside," allotting "French Inside" for Team Artisan.
After selections are made, Joan provides the rules of the competition and explains how their choices determine the type of party each team will host. The Crafty Beavers will serve "red" wine and will have the ability to use the "big" kitchen in the house for the chosen "American Outside" dinner, which will be served outside in the pool house. Entertainment for the American pool party will be a team of synchronized swimmers. Team Artisan will serve "white" wine during their "French" themed dinner prepared in the "little" kitchen and served in the dining room. Their entertainment will be a French mime.
With 36 hours and a budget of $2,500, each team must prepare a three-course meal for 12 people: the judges and the team itself. Judging will be based on the quality of food, presentation and hosting skills. The judges will visit each party twice: once for drinks and appetizers and again for dinner and dessert. For the individual competition, each Perfectionist must create a gift bag to be presented to the judges at the end of their meal.
OFF TO WORK THEY GO
While the Crafty Beavers collect to discuss their ideas for the American dinner party, Mitch demonstrates his pushy nature and Denise voices her frustration. As Mychael and Mitch disagree over deviled eggs and other ideas, Amy calls her group "a team of egos."
Michelle takes the helm of Team Artisan and volunteers her "killer" lobster tails for the main course, while Margo suggests serving rack of lamb as well. Kimberly and Michelle shop for dinner ingredients and spend a whopping $1,000 on their grocery spree. Upon their return to the Estate, teammate Darlene is astonished at the substantial cost of the groceries and feels left out as her ideas for the dinner party are ignored.
Tempers flare and personalities clash as strong leaders in both camps refuse to back down. Mitch and Denise's differences in project participation come to a head while creating an overlay for the table top, as Mitch feels Denise has made too many decisions about their project and Denise accuses Mitch of being too loud and talking over everyone else.
At Team Artisan, Darlene questions Michelle's ability to delegate, but because her teammates seem dazzled by Michelle's fancy French recipes and French accent, she has no choice but to play along. At Michelle's request, Darlene quickly concocts stuffed tomato appetizers. Michelle's lobsters unfortunately turn to mush, and the team struggles to remain united. Darlene scrambles to save the day, suggesting her recipe of mixing lobster meat with flour to create a cream sauce. Her effort is sabotaged, however, when she is told there is no flour in the kitchen, but later she learns that this is untrue.
FIRST VISIT: COCKTAILS AND APPS
Judges Candace Bushnell and David Evangelista arrive at the Estate for Team Artisan's dinner party without Bobby Flay, who is said to be caught in traffic. The night immediately gets off to a rough start as both judges complain about the temperature of the champagne. When Candace asks if the stuffed tomatoes are French, Darlene goes against the team and tells her that they are not, upsetting Michelle.
The hosts leave the house and walk to the pool house to have drinks and appetizers with the Crafty Beavers. Apple martinis are served along with deviled eggs. Candace expresses her dislike for the eggs as the synchronized swimmers walk through the pool house. Seated at an almost empty table, the judges are displeased as most of the Crafty Beavers crowd the kitchen. David complains that Mychael's scallop appetizer is cold and asks for them to be reheated and kept warm while he and Candace watch the synchronized swimming show.
SECOND VISIT: DINNER AND DESERT
Back at the Estate's dining room, Team Artisan serves dinner. Bobby arrives and asks for any first-course leftovers, but is told that none are left. Lamb is served as the main course, and Candace comments on how difficult it is to serve lamb at a dinner party, as it is typically cooked to personal taste. Dessert, however, wows the judges, and this brings the team and judges a bit closer.
Candace, David and Bobby make their way back to the pool house to join the Crafty Beavers for their dinner and dessert courses. Mychael offers Bobby one of her scallop appetizer plates as he missed their first course. The main course of beef tenderloin and succotash is served and enjoyed by Candace and Bobby. Heather's chocolate cheesecake brownies are offered for desert, but David and Candace complain that they are "doughy."
JUDGES' CRITIQUE
The judges announce that although they felt comfortable with Team Artisan, they believe the Crafty Beavers did a better job. Team Artisan's individual projects are reviewed, and the two chosen as the worst are Michelle's truffles in a tall box and Dawn's candle and framed mirror. Teams are dismissed and once again, the Crafty Beavers remain intact. Kimberly questions whether her future vote should go to the strongest player or to the weakest.
SECOND ELIMINATION
The five remaining members of Team Artisan join Joan and the judges at the Estate's rock garden. Dawn and Michelle urge their teammates to vote with their hearts. With a vote of two to one, Michelle is voted off the team and out of the running.
