ANOTHER ARTISAN GONE: DENISE DITCHED
With the Artisans down to three team members, friendship played a role in this weeks' elimination. When Denise's and Kimberly's individual projects didn't make the grade, Dawn's single vote sent Denise home and kept her teammate and partner-in-design, Kimberly, at the Estate.
THOSE CRAZY CRAFTY BEAVERS
As Day 16 begins, Amy relaxes on the couch while Mitch plays a little "honky-tonk" on the piano and sings a little ditty about Darlene. Darlene joins in and sings a rhyme about Mitch. It's evident that the Crafty Beavers are relating well to one another within their talented team.
CARRIAGE HOUSE MAKE-OVER
As the previous challenges have tested the Perfectionists' skills in the dining room, in the kitchen and in the outdoors, Joan explains that the next competition will test their knowledge in the workshop. Above the 19th Century carriage house on the Estate is an apartment with two bedrooms--one for each team to remodel. There is also a large great room divided into two sections by a curtain. Team Artisan is to create a dining room and fitness area on one side of the curtain and the Crafty Beavers are to design a home office and media center on the other. Each team is required to create at least one original piece of art and they must build a bed with a custom headboard made completely from scratch. Both teams will be supplied with equal amounts of hardware and lumber, and for the first time in the game, the teams will use the design workshop at the same time. They will each have a budget of $15,000 to use exclusively at Sears, but must select their supplies within a one-hour time limit. Judging will be based on creativity, ingenuity and overall craftsmanship.
For the individual projects, the players are asked to gift-wrap identical packages without using actual wrapping paper. With only 48 hours to complete their remodeling, the teams quickly gather at the apartment to look at the space and organize their thoughts.
SHOPPING SPREE
Kimberly's woodworking abilities will again come into play as she decides to be responsible for constructing the headboard for the bed. Dawn's energetic leadership shines through while the ladies shop at Sears. Dawn and Kimberly rush to choose paint supplies and exercise equipment for their fitness room, Denise quickly grabs silverware and dish sets for the dining room and the three race to the cashier before the one-hour time allotment runs out.
Even though Darlene feels she's not a perfect fit within her new group, she plans to make a great personal project and continue her silent strategy to "slip by under the radar." The Beavers divide and conquer Sears. Mitch and Darlene hunt for bedding to coincide with their soft, muted color scheme while Amy and Heather collect electronics for the home office and media room. Mitch is amused by Darlene's hyper behavior and likens her to a "jumping bean." With bedding, audio equipment, a computer, and other decorative items, the Crafty Beavers are ready to start their remodeling.
PAINTING AND PLANNING
Denise feels confident with her high-energy teammates as Dawn and Kimberly demonstrate their knowledge in construction and remodeling from previous experience in building homes with their husbands. The Artisans prepare for their first day of painting by taping off the room, and they plan for a decorative finish for the next day. Dawn and Kimberly sand the walls and discover that the two doors in the bedroom are actually stained dark wood doors. Kimberly wants to continue to chip away at the paint to fully reveal the doors but Denise worries that this type of project will take more time than they can afford.
LET'S MAKE A DEAL
Rather than sand the uneven walls of the apartment, Darlene decides on a more artistic approach and glues tissue paper to the wall to create a textured look before a glazed and painted finish. Amy sets up vases with flowers for her teammates to paint for their original piece of art and hopes that the judges will recognize their personal touches and attention to detail. Mitch spends most of his time constructing furniture for the apartment, but while stapling leather to his handmade ottomans, he runs out of staples and has trouble finding more. In an uncharacteristic move, Mitch barters with Kimberly, offering her a piece of wood molding that she needs to complete Team Artisan's headboard in exchange for her home-brought staples. Mitch even goes so far as to compliment Kimberly's headboard, but Kimberly is apprehensive in accepting his praise and doubts his sincerity.
EXERCISE IS HARD WORK
Denise, Dawn and Kimberly experience major trouble trying to assemble their exercise equipment. The weight machine has an excessive number of parts and they aren't able to finish properly assembling the treadmill. Kimberly bows out of the fitness project and suggests that Dawn and Denise try to finish while she eats dinner. Denise is aggravated by Kimberly's lackadaisical work ethic when it comes to the "grunt work" and decides with Dawn that because time is running out, the treadmill will stay as is and they'll forget about the weight machine.
MITCH'S WORK OF ART
Amy and Heather are worried that Mitch is spending too much time on the ottomans/coffee tables and encourage him to start working on the headboard. When Mitch finally gets to work on the headboard, what he produces is not what Amy was expecting. Mitch calls it "the frilly-est, girly-est, sissy-est thing" he's ever done and Dawn is entertained by its similarity to "a coffin lid." Mitch begins to regret his trade with Kimberly and hopes the Artisans aren't declared the winner because of their headboard.
A GIFT OF STYLE
The Perfectionists eventually manage find the time to work on their individual projects. Mitch's tuxedo box is almost complete when Darlene changes her wrapping design and asks Mitch for his thoughts. Kimberly is confident that her gift box will not be beaten but knows that her future at Estate could depend on her personal design.
JUDGES' EVALUATION
Candace, Bobby and David visit the apartment and review the final handiwork of each team. They examine the Crafty Beavers' cosmopolitan home office and while Candace does not care for the textured wall, she is impressed with Mitch's ottomans in the media room.
Bobby would've liked to see a scale in Team Artisan's fitness room and Candace questions the single piece of exercise equipment, but all judges are quite impressed by Kimberly's cream silk covered headboard and comment on it several times.
AND THE VERDICT IS…
The three judges make it clear that Kimberly's headboard was "stunning," but David thought their choice of colors for the bedding was "flat." Not being such a style maven, Bobby was more concerned with the function of each room and again commented on the lack of a scale or mat in the fitness area. The judges approve of Mitch's striped painted wall in the bedroom, but question the team on their choice of color for the headboard.
CRAFTY CHAMPIONS
Once again, the Crafty Beavers pull in yet another win. Kimberly and Denise's hand-wrapped gifts are selected as the least impressive individual projects from Team Artisan, and even though the Beavers make an effort to convince Dawn to vote for Kimberly in the hopes of continuing to compete against Denise, Dawn chooses for Denise to leave the Estate.
