GAME CHANGE: DARLENE OUT, KIMBERLY IN
The competition reached its boiling point as the game changed drastically. Ex-Perfectionists Tom, Michelle, Mychael, Tim, Margo, Denise and Kimberly returned to the Estate and again attempted to prove their skills in a brutal landscaping battle. Even with her unending talent and creative professionalism, Darlene was voted off the Estate, while Kimberly sheared her way back in.
URBAN MAKEOVER
Joan greets Mitch, Dawn, Heather, Darlene and Amy and announces that for their next challenge, a huge vacant lot has been divided in half for the teams to transform into community parks, complete with meditation area and picnic area. In order to give this bare property a second chance, the teams will be joined by some surprise guests who are also looking for a second chance. The Perfectionists of the past surprise their old teammates as Joan explains that the remaining players will choose returning contestants to join their team.
As Team Artisan has only two people, they are asked to choose first. Tim, Kimberly, Michelle and Margo join Mitch and Dawn to create a new Team Artisan, while Tom, Denise and Mychael join Darlene, Amy and Heather to form the new Crafty Beavers. Individual projects are to be uniquely designed topiaries. If any returning contestant is on the winning team and the judges choose that topiary as the team's best, that individual will be given a second chance in the game.
Each team has been given identical lots to landscape, a staging area, use of a bulldozer, sod, lumber and assorted vegetation. The projects will be judged on their meditation and picnic areas, as well as the overall appeal and comfort of the community park. The teams have 24 hours to complete both tasks and are able to shop online at Sears for tools and supplies with a budget of $5,000.
Both teams get started by shopping online at Sears. Amy is confident she can win this game and sees herself as "the whole package." As soon as the Crafty Beavers group together at their barren site, Amy gradually takes on a leadership role, but prefers not to have the job. While the Beavers discuss ideas and draft plans, the Artisans have already begun to break ground for their reflection pool.
ONE WOMAN SHOW
Tom, whom Darlene once dubbed the "self-appointed dictator," is surprised by Darlene's talent as she single-handedly builds a picnic table for her team. Even though Heather doubts her woodcutting abilities, Darlene impresses the other Crafty Beavers and feels as though "power tools are kind of like a sewing machine, only bigger."
The Artisans are organized and calm as the Perfectionists design a child's mini-playground, a bridge over the reflection pool and a meditation area. Mitch recognizes Kimberly's diligent work as she desperately tries to earn her way back into the game. The teams work through the night and start on their personal projects, knowing that their individual work must be extraordinary for a second chance at winning the game. As Mitch works on his topiary, he accidentally cuts the tip of his thumb and must go to the Emergency Room, but is able to return to his team later in the night. In his absence, Dawn takes charge, reviewing priorities and assigning responsibilities.
HEATHER VS. DARLENE
Tensions rise as Darlene approaches her team to express concerns about the climbing wall and overall fitness area. Heather and Darlene then argue about the placement of trees in the pagoda area, but Heather is adamant about sticking to the team's original plan and not wasting time rethinking decisions previously made. Tom and Heather aren't at all successful in their attempt to create a meditation area for the park and disassemble everything they spent hours constructing. Panic sets in, and Darlene insists on building something for which they will be judged. With Amy's help, Darlene assembles a three-sided latticed pagoda in a mere 30 minutes, while Darlene comments on how poorly Heather executed her project.
JUDGES' EVALUATION
After the Perfectionists' hours of sawing, building, digging and laying sod, Candace, Bobby and David visit the lots and evaluate the teams' projects. Team Artisan's lot features a meditation station with an outdoor fireplace, handcrafted tables and a child's play area built by Kimberly and Tim, along with a lined pond/reflection pool with a bridge, also designed by Tim and Kimberly. The judges are pleased with the look and feel of the Artisans' custom-designed park.
The Crafty Beavers' space includes the latticed pagoda with a small reflecting pool for a meditation space, Darlene's eight-person picnic table, a fitness area with a child's climbing wall, and a fire pit lined with flagstone. The team offers credit to Darlene for her expansive abilities, visibly upsetting Heather.
THE VERDICT
As David comments that the sod on the Crafty Beavers' lot does not look finished and Bobby believes their fitness area is not sturdy enough to hold even children, the judges declare Team Artisan the winner in their aesthetically pleasing transformation of an urban lot. Kimberly's derby hat topiary is chosen as the best individual project, and with this crucial win, she is welcomed back to the game as an Artisan, and the others will not return. The two individual projects of the Beavers that least impressed the judges were Darlene's and Amy's, and as Darlene's name is announced, she begins to tear up.
TASTE VS. SKILL
In a difficult decision, Darlene's teammates vote to eliminate her from the Estate, leaving Heather and Amy as the only remaining members of the Crafty Beavers.
