Professor Ronald Arkin from Georgia Tech's School of Interactive Computing discovered and proved a terrifying reality: Robots are capable of deceit.
The professor had a robot navigate a course to find a hiding spot. There were preset markers that the robot would have to knock down on the way to their destination. Other robots were then sent to follow the first, using overturned markers as a guide. However, the hiding robot also learned the system—and would deliberately knock over other obstacles just to create a false trail. It would then hide somewhere far away from the mess it had created.
This simple, yet incredibly disturbing, tactic allowed the hiding droid to trick the seeking bots 75% of the time! It's important to remember that the strategy was not programmed into the robot from the start. It picked up and devised its sneaky moves entirely on its own through trial and error.
