RiSE is the joint effort of a robotics engineering dream team: engineers from Carnegie Mellon, Berkeley, Stanford, The University of Pennsylvania, and Boston Dynamics, with funding from DARPA.
Designed with climbing in mind, RiSE uses micro hooks on its "feet" to grip the tiny grooves and peaks in seemingly flat surfaces. Much like a gecko, this bot can climb 90-degree concrete walls. With a completely flexible body, RiSE can adjust its posture in relation to aspect of the surface it's climbing, meaning that it can climb a tree just as quickly as it can climb any wall.
