Alex, an African Gray parrot, amazed the world by accomplishing a number of complex of tasks previously thought impossible for animals, and especially birds. Shown two objects and asked what was the same, he correctly said, "Co-lor." Asked the difference, he correctly said, "Shape." As described in National Geographic and the New York Times, Alex's abilities provided substantial evidence that he was a thinking animal, and not just a memory master. Over his 31 years, Alex even demonstrated basic counting and addition skills.
