KEN & TINA BATTLE BACK AS DIVORCEES DEPART
Teams spent a second leg in Delhi where a traditional Indian festival with paint turned teams every shade of the rainbow. Siblings Nick & Starr collected their third straight win while separated couple Ken & Tina overcame a Speed Bump penalty.
IN LIVING COLOR
Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 8:55am, siblings Nick & Starr opened their clue instructing them to travel through the congested streets of Delhi to find the central park of a sprawling apartment complex called Deshbandu Apartments.
The siblings ran into the central park of the Deshbandu Apartments and saw an explosion of color and festivity. Opening their clue, they discovered a Roadblock in which one person had to take part in the traditional Indian celebration known as the Holi Festival. Team members had to make their way through a crowd of revelers who were pelting them with powdered dye and water in the festival's tradition. When they reached one of three ladders at the center of the celebration, they had to climb the ladder and search through hundreds of envelopes marked "Try Again" to identify one of only six labeled THE AMAZING RACE. This specially marked envelope contained their next clue.
Starr took off her sunglasses and ventured through the crazy revelers, barely able to see through the cloud of color dyes being thrown everywhere. Coughing from the powdered dye, she arrived at the ladder, climbed up and began searching through the envelopes. On the pandemonium around her she remarked, "It's insanity. Once I was up on the ladder looking through the clues they started pelting me with paint so it was very difficult." After finding a clue marked THE AMAZING RACE, a now colorful Starr ran back to Nick and opened the envelope instructing them to travel to Old Delhi and find the Charity Birds Hospital, a haven for injured birds, and search through the cages for their next clue.
Divorcees Kelly & Christy had departed the mat in second place but, because their taxi driver became lost, mother and son Toni & Dallas passed them up and arrived at the Deshbandu Apartments before them. As soon as Dallas set foot in the Holi Festival, he tried dodging the paint and water to no avail. By the time he reached the ladder, his entire face and body had turned a bright shade of magenta. Toni remarked that she couldn't even see him through the haze from the powder and chaos of the festival. Returning to his mother with clue in hand, the now painted Dallas said, "They just come over and try to chuck it at you as hard as possible."
Showing up in third place, divorcee Kelly opted to attempt the Roadblock, but ran into a wall of paint and water as soon as she entered the festival. Unable to breathe from the powder and completely disoriented from the wild revelers, Kelly didn't make it to the ladder. Instead, she circled back to Christy where she rinsed out a mouthful of paint. Kelly then armed herself with sunglasses and a bandanna to cover her eyes and mouth. Kelly remarked, "Apparently this is a celebration or festival. The fact that someone celebrates this annually is just dreadful if you ask me."
As Terence & Sarah arrived at the apartment complex, Kelly made her bad situation worse when she finally made it through the craziness to the ladder. Instead of standing on the ladder and rifling through all of the envelopes until she found one marked THE AMAZING RACE, Kelly thought she was supposed to grab one envelope at a time, and run it back to Christy where they could open it together and see if there was a clue inside. In addition to wasting time, Kelly's method forced her to have more unpleasant interaction with the paint and crowds.
Kelly's frustration mounted as she continually ran back and forth unable to find an envelope with a clue in it. Seeing Terence and frat boy Dan swiftly complete the task and run off with their clues didn't make her feel any better. Now literally painted black head to toe, Kelly tripped and fell face first to the ground, prompting her to run back to Christy and tell her she could not finish the Roadblock because she would "seriously die." Christy encouraged her painted friend to try again "for a million dollars" and finally realized that Kelly did not have to keep running back with one envelope at a time. Armed with this knowledge, Kelly faced the crowd again and finally found a clue. Her partner Christy went a little too close to the action and became doused with paint from the sidelines.
Having fallen to fifth place, the divorcees exited the Holi Festival still hoping to stay ahead of last place Ken & Tina. However, Kelly & Christy made another mistake by not having their taxi driver wait for them while they were at the Roadblock. Now with both of them covered in paint, the duo had a very difficult time trying to flag a taxi driver who would take them. A stunned Kelly asked, "Do we look that bad?"
While the divorcees shouted in the streets trying to stop any taxi, Ken ran into the Holi Festival. Wife Tina yelled directions from the sidelines until a group of revelers doused her with green paint, drawing her fury as she shrieked, "What a bunch of morons." Covered in paint, Ken returned to his very green wife and the pair hopped into their taxi now in fifth place just ahead of divorcees Kelly & Christy, who had finally convinced a driver to take them by promising him lots of cash.
Arriving at the Charity Birds Hospital in first place, siblings Nick & Starr searched through the many cages until they found their next clue, a Detour with the choice of Bleary Eyed and Teary Eyed. In Bleary Eyed, teams made their way to a street corner to help the Department of Power. From street level, teams had to follow a power line keeping track of the small numbered tags that sporadically appear. Then, they had to find a man with a sewing machine and give him the list of numbers. If their list was correct, the man would direct them to a shop across the street where they would plug in a musical Ganesha to receive their next clue. In Teary Eyed, teams had to make their way to a spice market, pick up two 40-pound bags of dried chilies, and deliver them on foot one quarter mile to Sharwan Kumar & Sons. Then, they had to use a mortar and pestle to make enough chili powder to fill up a container to the designated line.
Siblings Nick & Starr chose Bleary Eyed, and hopped out of their tuk-tuk at the crowded intersection where they started looking for numbered tags along the tangled mess of telephone wires above them. Initially, they couldn't spot anything, but soon they saw a small, white tag with the number 48. When mother and son Toni & Dallas joined Nick & Starr on the congested streets, the siblings lied about the number they found and even spotted a second one before Dallas spotted it for himself. Then, Nick quickly played dumb and pretended he too had just made the discovery. Starr told her brother to just work with the mother and son so they could all get the task accomplished. Eventually the two teams, by working together, collected all of the numbers and presented them to the man at the sewing machine who directed them to the shop across the street. After both teams plugged in their Ganeshas, they opened their clue instructing them to travel to the Pit Stop at Humayun's tomb, a 16th Century collection of mausoleums commemorating past emperors.
SOME LIKE IT HOT
Holding steady in third place, newly dating couple Terence & Sarah opted to carry and crush chili peppers, but soon discovered why the task was called Teary Eyed. As the couple sat on the ground crushing their peppers with the mortar and pestle, they coughed from the spices and complained of burning skin. After they completely filled their container with the crushed peppers, Sarah remarked, "If somebody said to me right now, "˜Put cow manure on your body and it would make you feel better. I would lather myself up with that.'"
After a competitive taxi ride through the packed streets of Delhi, siblings Nick & Starr narrowly edged out mother and son Toni & Dallas to win their third consecutive leg. Phil rewarded the pair with a trip for two from Travelocity to Kauai. Starr said, "We're having the times of our lives. It's just been an awesome journey."
Having been saved from elimination at the end of the previous leg, Ken & Tina encountered their Speed Bump, an extra task that only they had to complete, when they arrived at Charity Birds Hospital. In this Speed Bump, Ken & Tina traveled to a Sikh Temple to take part in a common form of community service by volunteering to serve holy water to the patrons of the temple. Once they quenched the thirst of the hundreds of gathering worshipers and there were no more temple-goers desiring water, they would be able to continue on the Race with the hope of making up this valuable lost time.
Arriving at the temple, the separated couple began serving holy waters to the patrons. Tina commented, "The Sikhs come to worship there and I was bowing to each of them, and they taught me how to say welcome." Ken took a different approach in offering water by quipping about his green tint, "It's not every day you get served water by the Incredible Hulk."
Once Ken & Tina served all of the thirsty patrons, they hopped back in their taxi squarely in last place. With the threat of elimination looming, the couple's taxi became stuck in the crowded city streets. Instead of allowing the situation to defeat them, Ken & Tina got out of their taxi and directed people to move aside, clearing their path until the taxi reached the end of the crowded street. The couple then hopped back in and returned to the Charity Birds Hospital where they chose the Bleary Eyed Detour.
In the midst of the Detour, frat boys Andrew & Dan and divorcees Kelly & Christy walked along the crowded streets of Old Delhi separately, but neither team could find the correct numbered tags on the power lines. Instead, they wrote down numbers from larger hanging advertisements and store prices that were hanging on wires in front of shops. Both teams became frustrated when the man at the sewing machine continually rejected their numbers. Andrew & Dan offered to work with Kelly & Christy, but the divorcees soundly rejected their offer as Christy tersely responded, "I don't think so."
When Ken & Tina arrived at the intersection, they immediately spotted the tiny numbers that gave the other two teams such problems. The separated couple slowly and methodically worked their way down the street writing down every small white tag they saw, while the divorcees and frat boys still floundered. Kelly & Christy made a point of hiding their numbers from Ken & Tina's view, not knowing they would be no help at all. Ken & Tina both let out a cheer when the man at the sewing machine announced their numbers were correct and directed them to the shop across the street as the couple now moved up to fourth place.
As the separated couple left with their clue, they ran into the still clueless Andrew & Dan and offered some help. When Ken & Tina pointed them to the correct numbered tags, the frat boys thanked them profusely. Tina later said, "Strategically, was it a good decision? I don't know, but we've helped everybody along the way a little bit. That's just the way we are."
Just after Andrew & Dan got the help they needed, divorcees Kelly & Christy figured out on their own the correct tags to write down. The two teams battled it out in the congested streets knowing that one of them would most likely be going home. The frat boys got their clue first just ahead of the divorcees, but the heavy traffic in the city meant either team still had a chance on the way to the Pit Stop.
In the end, divorcees Kelly & Christy came up short as they stepped on the mat in last place. Tears fell as Phil informed the duo that they had been eliminated from the race. Christy commented, "Kelly and I have been through everything together. I am so proud of where I've been and what I've done since I left my ex-husband." Kelly added, "The race reiterated for me that Christy and I will do amazing things in life and we'll always be each other's support system. That's just how it's going to be."
