Mass data dumps
In the past year, a massive leak of personal data from the extramarital-themed dating site Ashley Madison brought awareness to the difficulties with keeping anything secret on the internet. Up to 37 million accounts were involved. New websites were created to allow anybody to look up whether their significant other (or coworker down the hall) might have had an email address registered with the service.
The problems with huge information dumps are very real and can come with a greater consequence than public shaming. With personal information released to the public like addresses, emails, and credit card numbers, users in other leaks can face a significant risk of criminal harassment, fraud, and even extortion.
