Holding information hostage
Some hackers don't want to steal your information—they want to hold it hostage. Using "ransomware," cyber criminals infect your computer with a lock-out virus, preventing you from reading or accessing your personal files. Want to restore access? You'll have to pay their price.
In a recent case, the gang behind Cryptolocker made an estimated $3 million by forcing victims to pay to have their own data unscrambled. Using Bitcoin, a popular currency in the internet underworld, made payments virtually untraceable.
