Everyone knows that once something is posted online, you can never truly take it back. But sometimes you're not the one posting it. In a recent trend called "revenge porn," nude images and videos are uploaded by former intimate partners to cause humiliation and/or make profit.
Certain states already have laws on the books prohibiting this incredibly demeaning and harmful crime. While a steep criminal penalty is necessary—and well deserved—for individuals illegally uploading these images and videos, the victims' fates are already sealed. Because the salacious images and videos can be accompanied by other personal information, victims' lives can be disrupted from exposure to cyberstalking, threats, and difficulties finding work.
