Smartphones may have existed 15 years ago, but there wasn't exactly a huge market—and any black market would have also been limited. The iPhone wasn't even introduced until 2007 and the first Android device rolled out a year later. Today, they're everywhere and they're valuable. That smartphone in your pocket is "almost 30 times more valuable per ounce than a block of solid silver—and almost as easy to convert discreetly into cash."
One out of every ten American smartphone owners reportedly had their device stolen in 2013, and 68% of the victims never got it back.
