Chapter 4: Fight For Your Write
Molly’s had to fight for a lot of things in her life, including her marriage and her career. But when she turned in her manuscript to her publisher, Xander, she found herself fighting for something she’d never anticipated: her own creative direction.
Although Xander said her work was a “phenomenon,” he requested one small change that was anything but. In fact, it would’ve required Molly to rewrite most of her book. Discouraged and uninspired, Molly tried to back out of the book deal only to learn there would be no legal way to abandon the project now. As Xander reminded her many times, he contractually owns both her book and her.
Instead of caving to her mustachioed boss’ commands, Molly decided to refuel her imagination and save her book from being a phenomenal failure. Using her uncanny wit and masterful persuasion skills, Molly cooked up a fool-proof formula for getting Xander to nix the new sci-fi direction—and all she had to do was appeal to his narcissism.
Xander couldn’t refuse Molly’s inclusion of a character inspired by him, and he insisted she ditch the time-travel storyline in favor of her original idea. Her trick worked, and Molly was able to walk away from the negotiation table feeling proud of her stick-to-itiveness.
