Over the weekend, Mom was among several shows celebrated at the Television Academy Honors, which acknowledges television programs that raise awareness and create change concerning social issues. While it's rare for a sitcom to receive this type of honor, creator Chuck Lorre who was on hand to accept the award, spoke about the importance of approaching such dark subject matter with a sense of humor.
In the episode honored, "Zombies & Cobb Salad", Bonnie (Allison Janney) falls off the wagon and starts drinking again, prompting Christy (Anna Faris) to stage an intervention with Regina (Octavia Spencer) and Marjorie (Mimi Kennedy) from their AA group. Bonnie realizes that she can't take the pain of disappointing her daughter by drinking anymore, so she vows to do everything she can to keep sober.
The fans that appreciate the show's balance between hardship and humor have something to look forward to when Mom returns for its second season next fall. For more information on Sunday's ceremony, check out a full article on Variety.com!
