Season Five Cheat Sheet
Major notes: The Next Generation keeps up a healthy mix of standalone and serialized episodes throughout the fifth season. New recurring characters like the headstrong Bajoran Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes) mix things up for the close, main crew. Plus, Star Trek The Original Series star Leonard Nimoy reprises his role as Spock in the two-part episode “Unification.”
Best episode: “The Inner Light” highlights some of Stewart’s best acting in the entire series run. When hit with an energy beam from an alien probe, Picard slips into a coma for less than half an hour. But for Picard, he feels that he’s lived through most of his life, going native on a primitive planet. The ending is pretty heartbreaking, so prepare to grab some tissues for this one.
There is also a love-it-or-hate-it moment in season five on episode “Darmok.” Captain Picard and the Enterprise crew encounter the Tamarians, who communicate solely through allegory. Sure the premise is a little heady, but the outcome is beautiful and powerful. Prepare yourself.
