With unemployment rates on the rise and the need for extra income to get by, you might be considering the idea of starting your own business. It's a great way to pursue your passion while making extra income. While it is a fantastic idea if you are looking for something more, you definitely need to take precautions and be prepared before taking the leap. Being prepared mentally, emotionally and financially will save any hiccups in the long run.
- Getting Started - When you start your own business, you might be expecting instant success and income, but most of the time, this is not the case. You should expect to put in a large amount of hours with little to no vacation time and income at the beginning. It will take a while to get it up and running. You should go into your business venture expecting to work a 60-80 hour work week. the important thing is to stay strong, work hard and remember why you started in the first place. After 1-2 years of hard work and dedication, your business will be a smart and lucrative venture.
- Become Friends With Rejection - Starting a business means enduring a bumpy ride. You will be turned down, lose money and feel as though you have failed. But as with any small business, you have to be creative, learn the industry and become strong. It may be hard to pick yourself up after a long day and return to work excited but this will become a necessary routine as the business gets started.
- Expect Loses Before Gains - Something to expect when starting a business is to actually lose money before you make money. Small businesses are a big investment of time and money. This will particularly come into play when you are getting the office started (buying equipment, hiring employees, etc.). It's definitely a good idea to research how you and your family will get by in this start-up stage.
- Seek Support - One of the most important factors when starting a business is getting support from those around you. This could be your family and friends or it could be fellow small business owners or people in the same industry who know what you are going through and can help you along the way. Also, make sure you invest in a team that can help you. It's important to find a lawyer, accountant and even marketing people if necessary - they will all help you start a business in the smartest ways possible.
- All Roles in One - When first starting and being unable to hire a large team, it's important to learn how to run and successfully market every aspect of the business. You will need to be the owner, the salesperson, the marketing consultant, accountant and many more. Be prepared to learn all roles that will be necessary to get the business off the ground; don't be afraid to ask for help. You can never be too knowledgeable.
Whatever business you decide to start should be based on a love for the industry. This will help you get through all of the struggles and road blocks you might encounter in the start-up phase. If you do your research, stick to a smart budget and employee the efforts of people who can help you succeed, you will be well on your way to starting a successful business.
