The Talk - Julie Chen Reveals Family Kidnapping and Murder, Choosing 'Light' Over 'Darkness'
Air Date: 09/15/16
"The Talk" host Julie Chen opens up about a family tragedy: the kidnapping and murder of her great-grandmother, who was held hostage along with Julie's aunt. "The bandits said they would kill them," reveals Julie, "if a large ransom wasn't paid." Julie's uncle, who was entrusted to deliver the ransom, "double-crossed my grandfather and disappeared into the night with the money." As a result, the bandits murdered Julie's great-grandmother and Julie's aunt ultimately wed one of the kidnappers. Instead of wanting revenge, her grandfather blamed the tragedy on "the fact that the bandits didn't have an education" and wound up founding a school in his native Burma, now known as Myanmar. Years later, Julie visited the school, and reveals, "I really felt this sense of gratitude... what my grandfather did essentially worked... I personally learned something very valuable... When you're faced with something so tragic, you can either choose the darkness or you can choose the light."
