Air Date: 10/06/16
Julie Chen recaps Viola Davis' award-winning career and contributions to Hollywood, and asks about her next career goal. Viola responds, "I've been quoting a great French writer lately, he said 'I came here to live out loud...' I want to raise my daughter to be an upstanding great misbehaver, I want to be a great wife, I want to change the landscape of women of color in the narrative in TV, film, and theater... and listen, I want to be happy in all of that." Sheryl Underwood notes what inspired her to dream so big, despite growing up in poverty. Viola reveals, "My sister, who I met for the first time when she was nine, I was five. She was being raised by my grandparents... She said what inspired her was seeing an indoor toilet for the first time... she asked me, at the age of nine, "What do you want to be, because that is the only thing that's going to get you out of this circumstance.' For her, it was a toilet. For me, it was her."
