If you haven’t heard of Jen Atkin, then you probably don't have an Instagram or Snapchat account. You see, besides being an A-list hairstylist, Atkin is a certified social media guru.

More than 2 million people follow @jenatkinhair on Instagram alone to see the styles she dreams up for famous clients, including Kendall Jenner and the Kardashians, Riley Keough, Emmy Rossum of Showtime's Shameless, and Jenna Dewan Tatum, who formerly played Lucy Lane on The CW's Supergirl and also guest starred on CBS's Man With A Plan.

This digital success has helped pave the way for her veritable empire, which now includes Mane Addicts (a website with hair inspiration and how-tos, plus classes for pro stylists) and the hair care line Ouai (pronounced way), which has fast become a cool-girl favorite.

Ouai's newest launch, its Hair Consultation service, creates specialized product regimens for customers based on their answers to a short quiz. We caught up with Atkin to get personal ourselves.

When did you know you wanted to be a hairstylist?

I was obsessed with Natalie Imbruglia's short haircut in her "Torn" music video when I was a teenager in Utah. No one could give me the cut I wanted, so I went to the store, bought a pack of shaving razors and started cutting my own hair. Soon I was cutting all of my friends' hair in my parents' garage.

After high school, I drove to California with only $300 and my Honda Civic hatchback. I called salons until, finally, [I got a job as] a receptionist at Estilo Salon in Beverly Hills. I remember running out to feed meters for Bette Midler. I was so excited.

What was your first big break?

Getting a job at Chris McMillan [Jennifer Aniston's mane man] as a stylist. I also got a chance to work the shows in Paris on [top hairstylist] Guido's team.

How has social media changed the game for hairstylists?

It's been a great outlet for new talent and established artists to showcase their work to a broader audience. New artists are now getting exposure and booking clients through their social pages, which act as personal portfolios.

What was the inspiration for Ouai?

I've spent so much time in France for work and Fashion Week, and it's always been a place that inspires me. The Parisian woman is what every woman aspires to be: casual, effortless and beautiful. Ouai is all about that nonchalant attitude of the French—saying yes to good hair.

Why did you decide to offer the new consultation service?

One of the primary opponents to beautiful hair is using the wrong products. I wanted to take the guesswork out of the product selection process and get people on a hair regimen designed to suit their unique needs—like I would if they were my clients.
