The 36th Annual CMA Awards will be hosted by Vince Gill will feature special performances by Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Vince Gill, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, George Strait and Shania Twain.
Vince Gill
Vince Gill holds the record for most CMA Award wins with 18. For five consecutive years (1991-1995), Gill won the CMA Male Vocalist of the Year Award, an achievement unequaled in the history of the CMA Awards. Gill will perform new music from his latest MCA Records album, which will be released in early 2003.
Brooks & Dunn
Multi-platinum duo Brooks & Dunn have earned 34 CMA nominations over the past decade. They are nominated this year for both Entertainer of the Year, which they won in 1996, and Vocal Duo of the Year, which they have won nine times (1992-1999, 2001).
Kenny Chesney
Kenny Chesney is nominated for three awards this year: Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year for No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems, which debuted in late April and is nearing double-platinum status.
Faith Hill
After taking time off to give birth to her third daughter, Faith Hill returns to country music with a new album, Cry, and a much-anticipated performance on the 2002 CMA Awards. Having sold more than 25 million records in her eight-year career, Hill's last album, Breathe, sold nearly six million copies.
Alan Jackson
Alan Jackson set a record this year, receiving 10 CMA Award nominations. The previous record was held by Merle Haggard, who received nine CMA Award nominations in 1970. Jackson is nominated for the following awards: Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for Drive, Vocal Event of the Year with George Strait for "Designated Drinker," and Single, Song and Video of the Year for both "Drive (For Daddy Gene)" and "Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)?" which he debuted on the 2001 CMA Awards. Jackson's album Drive is currently the fourth, best-selling album, year-to-date, across all genres.
Toby Keith
Toby Keith is also scheduled to perform. The reigning CMA Male Vocalist of the Year has been nominated for six CMA awards: Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for Pull My Chain, single of the year and song of the year for "Courtesy Of The Red, White & Blue (The Angry American)" and Video of the Year for "I Wanna Talk About Me." Keith's latest album, Unleashed, which was released in late July, has already sold one million copies.
Brad Paisley
Three-time Male Vocalist of the Year nominee Brad Paisley has earned four nominations this year: Male Vocalist of the Year, Single of the Year, Song of the Year and Video of the Year for "I'm Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin' Song)." Paisley won his first CMA Award in 2000 with the coveted Horizon Award and won again in 2001 for Vocal Event for "Too Country" with Country legends George Jones, Bill Anderson and Buck Owens.
George Strait
George Strait still leads all artists with 70 career CMA Award nominations. This year, he is nominated in four categories: Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for The Road Less Traveled and Vocal Event of the Year for his duet with Jackson on "Designated Drinker." In his career, Strait has sold 57 million albums, with 49 number-one hits.
Shania Twain
International superstar and CMA Entertainer of the Year (1999) Shania Twain makes her much-anticipated return to the CMA Awards in 2002 with her first network television performance since 1999. Twain will perform new music from her soon-to-be released fourth album UP!. Twain's albums, Come On Over (1997), The Woman in Me (1995), and her self-titled debut album (1993), have sold more than 50 million copies--more than any other woman in country music history. Twain returns to television after a two-year hiatus, during which she gave birth to her son, Eja, as well as wrote and recorded her new album with husband/producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange.
