Kurt Russell, J.T. Walsh and Kathleen Quinlan star in this thriller about an ordinary married couple who get caught up in a world of intense terror when their car breaks down while they are driving through the vast, desolate desert terrain of the American Southwest.

Traveling cross-country, the Taylors opt for a scenic route, but their SUV breaks down miles from the nearest human habitation. Help appears on the horizon in the form of an 18-wheeler truck. The driver, Red Barr, is an over-the-road trucker, immaculate and professional, who seems to harken back to a time when long-haul truckers were "knights of the road." He offers Jeff and Amy a ride to Belle's Diner, the nearest place along the lonely stretch of highway. Amy agrees to go with him and call a tow truck from the diner while Jeff waits with the car.

Shortly after the truck has gone, Jeff locates the problem with his car -- a loose wire -- and is able to fix it. But, when he drives on to Belle's Diner to catch up with Amy, she has disappeared. Although Belle's is not crowded, the bartender and the few customers claim never to have seen either Amy or Red, and Jeff's anxiety is heightened by his gnawing suspicion that they aren't telling him the truth.

Back on the road, Jeff searches for Red's truck, but when he finally finds it, the ethically challenged Good Samaritan trucker denies ever having seen him or Amy. When the police are brought into the picture, they are skeptical of Jeff's story. With no one to help him, Jeff continues on his determined, increasingly desperate search for his wife, who has vanished into the immense, sun-backed emptiness where the law doesn't seem to reach.
