Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden, Thomas Gibson, and Golden Globe Award winner Regina Taylor star in this story of a young writer whose life changes when her troubled young nephew comes to live with her.

Vicki Miller's (Harden) well-ordered life is plunged into chaos when her nephew Bobby (Taylor Handley), the child of her mentally challenged brother and sister-in-law, appears on her doorstep. It soon becomes apparent that Bobby has run away from home. Initially, Vicki keeps his presence a secret, even from her probing mother Vera (Kate Nelligan), who knows he is missing and calls Vicki looking for him.

Following her dream, Vicki goes to a writer's conference. She leaves Bobby with her sister Ruth (Roxanne Hart), who raised the boy before his parents won custody of him. It doesn't take long before Ruth and Bobby are at odds with each other, and soon Bobby appears at the conference, begging Vicki to take him home.

Bobby and Vicki slowly develop a trusting bond between them. Bobby finally opens up to her about the pain of his past and his experiences with his parents. Bobby's memories force Vicki to face her own dark feelings. Over time their bond grows, giving them both the strength to find themselves on the road to healing and happiness.

Academy Award nominee Kate Nelligan, Taylor Handley, Roxanne Hart and Tony Award winner Marian Seldes also star. Thomas Gibson plays Vicki's love interest, Aiden Byrnes; Regina Taylor plays Vicki's and Bobby's therapist, Dr. Gardner.
