12/1994Hanssen is reassigned to FBI Headquarters, in the Office of the Assistant Director for the National Security Division.
2/12/1995Hanssen is detailed to serve as FBI's senior representative to the Office of Foreign Missions of the United States Department of State (DOS/OFM).
12/18/1996FBI Special Agent Earl Edwin Pitts is arrested and charged with espionage.
7/1997Hanssen conducts first of 10 searches of the FBI's collected computerized databases of classified and unclassified investigative files and indices for the purpose of determining whether the FBI was aware of recent dead drops in Virginia -- or of operational activity at Foxstone Park.
1998Hanssen works at the Office of Foreign Missions - State Department.
10/2000The "B" files are given to the Bureau by a Soviet contact via the CIA. The FBI begins investigating Hanssen.
12/12/2000FBI surveillance observes Hanssen driving four times past the Foxstone Park sign in Vienna, VA. (It is the signal site associated with a dead-drop site, which was used from early on in the KGB's "B" operation.) FBI surveillance personnel observe Hanssen walking into a store near Foxstone Park at the same time as a known SVR officer is in front of the store.
1/9/2001Hanssen is observed stopping in front of the Foxstone Park signal site.
1/13/2001Hanssen is assigned to a newly created position in the Information Resources Division at FBI Headquarters so the FBI can more effectively monitor his daily activities without alerting him to their ongoing investigation of him.
1/23/2001Hanssen is observed coming to a rolling stop near the Foxstone Park signal site.
1/26/2001Hanssen drives slowly past the Foxstone Park signal site.
1/30/2001The FBI searches Hanssen's Ford Taurus.
