ON GOLDEN POND is the tender love story of Ethel (Andrews) and Norman (Plummer) Thayer. Curmudgeonly Norman has a wry sense of humor, and often jokes about his failing memory and his belief that his days are numbered. Norman and his spry and frank wife Ethel clearly care deeply about one another, despite their affectionate daily bickering.
When the Thayers return to their Maine summer home on Golden Pond, their predictable daily routine is disrupted by a rare visit from their divorced daughter, Chelsea (Headly), her boyfriend, Bill Ray (Robards), and his rebellious 13-year-old son Billy (Rothhaar). During their stay, Billy becomes the grandchild Norman never had: the boy's energy and eagerness to fish and chat with him bring out a side of Norman that Ethel hasn't seen in decades. Meanwhile, after experiencing the usual awkward moments with her wisecracking father, Chelsea finally tells the unprepared Norman what she has long sought and still desires from their relationship.
