Ulrich Graf, born July 6, 1878 in Bachhagel, Germany, was a charter member of the German Workers' Party, which later merged with the National Socialist Party to become the National Socialist German Workers (or Nazi) Party. Graf served as Hitler's personal bodyguard from 1920 to 1923. On November 9, 1923, during Hitler's attempted putsch, or coup d'etat against the Bavarian government, chaos broke out when the German Army opened fire on Hitler and his followers. Graf took several bullets when he stood in front of Hitler and pushed him to the ground, most likely saving Hitler's life. Graf survived his wounds, however, and in 1936 was elected to the Reichstag, or German Legislature. He served under Hitler throughout World War II, reaching the rank of Brigadier General, and is reported to have survived the war and died in March 1950.
